Hi, I would like to know your opinion on my chances at Vassar College.
I made a 32 on the ACT. I plan on taking it again to raise my score.
G.P.A.- 3.9 unweighted 4.3 weighted
AP Human Geography- 4 on exam
AP Chemistry-4
AP English Lang-3
AP Environmental Science-4
Senior year I plan on taking AP Stats, AP European History, and AP Lit.
I take mostly honors classes if they are available.
I am an officer in BETA Club, KET Club, and a school book club.
I am also in Interact Club, National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, and Young Democrats.
I do a lot of community service. I have almost 80 hours worth.
I will graduate with Honors and Distinction.
I absolutely love to read and write, so much so that I am one of the founders of a writing and reading club at my school.
I am also apart of the school newspaper.
I come from a fairly low income family and I have had two different, short-term part time jobs.
I would love to go to Vassar if I can.
Hi–It’s really impossible to say. Your stats seem in the ballpark but Vassar is also holistic in that it’s been known to reject higher stats people who it feels won’t be happy there. One example that the Adcoms have given in a presentation that they sometimes run for prospectives, they hand out two applications. One has strong scores than the other but that one doesn’t get “in” to Vassar because the application says tech all over it. The other one with slightly lower scores is a better fit, and they said that of the two that one works better at Vassar. Also applying ED would help. I know that most people suggest not applying ED if you’re planning on FA but Vassar is quite generous with FA for low-income students and it’s my perception that if Vassar is the school for you ED would increase your chances. I strongly recommend contacting them early for an interview and be sure to let them know, even though you are ED, that Vassar is your passion, and tell them why. Vassar offers interviews with alumni locally. You won’t need to travel for it. Showing that you understand its unique community and what you can contribute to its campus might help. Best of luck.
Depending on how low-income you are, Vassar does have fly-in programs for students. If at all possible, do visit- sit in on a class, even stay in a dorm. Vassar has a very distinct personality, and you want to be sure that it is one that suits you!
One thing we learned from the admissions presentation at Vassar is that they, like some other similar colleges, do “superscore” test results, so for instance if you got a 31 in math and a 33 in reading on the first sitting of the ACT, but a 33 in math and a 31 in reading the second time, that equals a 33 in math and a 33 in reading in the eyes of Vassar. The rationale is that it makes their own students look more competitive! This was a great tip and it did inspire our son to sit for the ACT again. Just thought I would pass it along. And FWIW, your stats look OK for Vassar. I would say, in agreement with Dustyfeathers general point, that your essay is your chance to prove that you are the type that would flourish at Vassar in particular.
Also, depends on your gender: Males have higher acceptance rates than females (as is the case at many LACs)
“The rationale is that it makes their own students look more competitive!” LOL, I know you’re just kidding.
Anybody know stats for ED2
My daughter has an ACT 34 superscore and 98 average 7 Ap classes
very music oriented going for Theatre and Music at Vassar…
Does that sound like a good chance?
Also how many people applied ED1 and how many were accepted?
Thank you for your responses so far. I ended up applying RD because I applied ED somewhere else and was rejected. I managed to get my ACT superscore to a 33. I am a female. I decided to take a 4th AP this year as well. Are my chances any better with my new ACT score? Also, my twin sister is applying and has similar stats to mine. Do you think this hurts my chances?
