Hi y’all! I’m an IB student in and my top schools are George Washington, University of Maryland, Temple University , Tulane University, Ohio State, and Hofstra University. My GPA was fairly strong until my sophomore year when I got sick and missed most of the year. I’m currently a junior and as my health has improved again so have my grades but sadly I’m most likely gonna be applying to colleges with only a 3.65 ;( I hope schools grant me some leniency because of my health struggles but I’m not counting on it so I will definitely be applying to many safeties. I haven’t taken my ACT yet but i’m not a great test taker so I’m not super hopeful. Other than my grades I’ve been on a competitive dance team since I was a little kid and and involved in french honor society as well as key club and the student leadership program at my school.
If you had a documented medical issue, school will consider that in their review of your application. Obviously you didn’t do too badly if you missed almost an entire year and still have a respectable GPA. Hard to chance without standardized test scores so focus on taking practice tests and being as prepared as possible. Focus on match and safety schools (as everyone should!) when you have your results.
Hey! I was in like the exact same situation when I was applying to colleges (honestly just logged into my account for the first time since hs to reply to this) What I learned from all my counselors was that bc of ur health issue you need to focus on keeping an upward trend in GPA (aim for a 4.0 first semester senior year, I know it seems impossible but it’s really helpful. Then really work on being unique in your essays (try not to mention the health thing unless it really is a huge part of who you are otherwise it may come off as a sob story) and acing the standardized tests. Put your nose to the grindstone and work on being a superstar everywhere else in your application. However, I think that your top schools are very viable for you to get into so don’t freak out yet, just try your best to compensate for the grades everywhere else in your app!
