I am still a high school sophomore, but i am interested in colleges…
My intended major for college would be Biomedical Sciences, and I would be studying under the Pre-Med program.
I have not taken the SAT or the ACT yet but I am planning on doing that soon.
My unweighted GPA is: 3.85
I am on a competitive dance company, volunteer at my local church, and coach a recreational soccer team for 1st grade girls.
I am apart of Student Body and Italian club.
I take all honors courses, and 2 college, in which my average is a 94.
I know the SAT and ACT’s are a huge part of admissions, but what would be my chance so far?
p.s- i am taking my SATII for chemistry this May, and soon the PSAT
Dear purple05 : As a sophomore, you have a huge amount of ground to cover, but I would make the following suggestions. Expect that you should take every AP science course possible : Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The other so-called “soft” science AP courses will not augment your profile as strongly as the big three. Next, be sure to push your mathematics curriculum including a Calculus BC course as a preferred option to Calculus AB. Statistics AP will not carry nearly the same weight or value. In your second year of High School, I would expect to have seen one or two AP exams on the docket this year; although that is not a killer by any means, recognize that your “competition” will already be moving in that direction.
Chemistry, biochemistry, and more recently, biology have all grown in their respective strengths at Boston College. Specifically in Chemistry, there is increasing import on advanced lab research, particularly for those considering future careers in sciences.
I would add to Scott’s post that, since BC has a Core Curriculum, which involves lotsa readin’ and writin’, also consider AP Lit and AP History (Euro or US) and at least four years of foreign language. In essence, 4 years each of the key academic subjects.
Thank you for the help scootj, I will definitely look into more AP courses while planning my schedule for the upcoming year.
