Cornell is a reach for you, just based on SAT scores, as are Columbia, Duke, MIT, and John Hopkins. Elon is good for you. I applied there too. I don’t much about the others though. Good luck.

I do not know how much of a difference this makes but I did interviews with Duke, University of Rochester, Johns Hopkins, and MIT. I visited the campuses of Columbia, Stony Brook, and Northeastern. I know it has been a couple of days, but could anybody else chance me? I want a little idea of where I may be heading here. Thanks.

Well, you wasted your time applying to Columbia, Cornell, Duke, JHU, and MIT. Sorry to sound harsh, but it’s the truth. I’m not too familiar with the other schools, but it’s a bit late to chance you at any rate. Best of luck with your admissions!

It is been my understanding that many of the elite schools (princeton i recall even having published this I believe) add a curve or weighting to the SAT/ACT scores of minority applicants.

For example I recall it may be as much as 5 points added to your ACT score for african americans.

If this is the case, then your weighted SAT scores along with your 4.0 GPA may get you into many schools, even top tier schools. This is based on memory but Im sure some more knowledgeable member can confirm.

My school is really new so that could explain why there aren’t many AP courses offered. My school has AP English and I get straight A’s in it. I seek out classes outside my school in order to show I could handle advanced work. I took a college Statistics class last semester. My school doesn’t offer Calculus or Physics so I take it at NYU through a program. This semester, I am focusing on applying to as many scholarships as I could so I am not taking a college course. I am not great at standardized test taking. I hope the schools could overlook that because I try to excel at everything else to make up for that. If I don’t get into those schools I would not be mad because I did all I could to show that I am motivated and would take advantage of the resources at their institution.

Thank you so much for your replies. I love having different perspectives. @Desperatu I heard something similar to that before because often times schools seek out more minorities so that the school could be diverse. I thought that I would have a even better chance since I am an African American female that wants to do engineering. I do not see that often.

Vloria - schools do look at the entire package, but GPA and SAT/ACT are what are first looked at in order to determine academic strength. Unfortunately, your SAT scores really do not indicate to colleges that you would do well at the most elite schools in the country. (I’m not trying to make a personal attack, nor do I necessarily believe that myself - I’m merely putting myself in the shoes of an admissions officer.)
