What Are My Chances?: Newhouse School - Syracuse University

Hey guys, I'm an international student and I really want to go Newhouse SU. Ive heard it is a very competitive school and I don't think I meet the requirements. However, it would be great if you could take a look at my stats and other info to see if I have a chance or not. Thanks.

I have an overall 3.3 GPA at the moment (will be a senior after the summer) so I may be able to get it up with my first semester Senior Year grades. I am in the IB. I do not take the IB Diploma… however I take ALL IB classes.
Higher Level- Econ, English, Biology
Standart Level- Math Studies, Theatre Arts, Ab-initio Spanish
My senior year I am taking a year long Journalism course ( I did not take it Junior year because it was not offered.. it is a new course)
My first semester as a Junior I did not do as well ( it was my first year at the school and first year in the IB program as a whole… I was previously at an AP school… and did not know much about the IB). However I learnt from my mistakes and ended up doing much better second semester Junior year.
1st sem- 3.04 GPA
2nd sem- 3.56 GPA
(kinda shows improvement.. is that kinda good?)

Throughout my HS career I have:

Freshman year: I took part in a school competition called "Poetry Out Loud" and I won first place out of many upperclassman.

Soph year: I tried out for my school Forensics team (Oral Interpretation)- and I made the "back up" person… did not make it because it was very competitive… all seniors.

I was also Vice President of a club at my school called SPAR (Students for the Protection of Animal Rights). I am an animal lover and have done a lot of donation and fund raising for the local animal shelter in Singapore.

Junior year: AT MY NEW SCHOOL… I again tried out for the Forensics team (Oral Interpretation: Comic and Serious). We had to take part in 2 events. I made it and ended up winning Silver place for both my events!
This was a competition between many schools in surrounding countries called: MESAC (Middle East South Asia Conference)… yes I am an international student.

I have had two jobs in Singapore. I worked as a waitress at two different restaurants during my breaks which was a good experience.
My SAT score is deff gonna bring me down… Ive taken it once and I got a solid 1600 (mostly even in all sections, 9 on the essay). Im gonna re- take it… but I'm honestly not very good at the SAT so I'm not sure I can improve an significant amount… but I'm gonna try!

So yeah..
Do you think I have a chance at SU- Newhouse? Also any tips and advice for applying etc? Any other good communication schools I should look at?

Thanks

Sorry, but you’re way off. You have a low GPA and the problem is that your low SAT basically “confirms” your GPA.

To be competitive you realistically need about a 3.6 and a 2100. If your GPA is a bit lower, you can offset it with a higher SAT score (or vice versa) but you really don’t have either one going on.

I think you really should perhaps look into some test-optional schools, but I’m not sure many of them have the sort of Communications program you are seeking.

Yeah thats what I thought :frowning:

Do you go to SU? Or alumni?

Also should I still apply to SU and put Newhouse as my first option and say Arts and Sciences as my second?

Will Early Decision help… maybe?

OP, the ranking of colleges when you apply shouldn’t be your concern. No offense, but as an int’l student, even Arts and Sciences would be a huge stretch for you. 1. Your SAT is below the average for Syracuse and they give priorities to American students and even American students with your stats get rejected. I suggest you bring your test scores and GPA up pronto

@AnnieBeats‌ Yeah but I’m gonna be a senior next year… and I’ll be in college by the end of my first semester senior year. So i don’t think thats an option.
I’m gonna work on my SAT… see what I can do… I really suck at it though.

My GPA is low but I take all IB courses… the IB is some hard ■■■■ and I didn’t do too badly.
But yeah I get it i’m pretty far off. I’m just gonna apply… set it as one of my reach schools and see what happens I guess.

Thanks for your responses.

@meg31776‌, neither but my son will be a freshman at Newhouse next year.
For point of reference he had a 3.4 and a 2250 and while his SAT is probably on the high end for Newhouse, his GPA was certainly not.

Yeah that makes sense

Thanks @soze‌ !
