I work very hard and I am passionate about what I want to major in and my desire to attend UC Berkeley!

What are my chances of getting these schools: UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University?

UCSC: Low match
Berkeley: Reach
UNC-CH: Reach
NCSU: Match

Try Bates or another test-optional college on top…

I would have said that you have a great chance, but your SAT score is very close to the median nation-wide.

There is also something very fishy about your getting 99% in college courses. In the real sociology class I am taking at a decent university, not one person in my class of 300 scored over 96% on either midterm. Maybe this is why there are so many 4.0s in community college.

hun why do people like you who are quite qualified academically to be in top schools like berk even have anxiety about getting in… YOU WILL GET IN!!! u have tons of ECS lors of Honors. your also african american and berk and other institutions are DESPERATE for people of color who hhave your academic rigor. By admitting students like you it makes the college look good. WIN WIN. I think if you stressed in your application that you have done the best you can do IN SPITE of your circumstances —and clearly you have— then i think you have a great chance at berk… UCLA may be more difficult than Berk but you are still an excellent candidate for that school too relax…you’ve got this!

chance me back? I’m also african american and applying to berkeley  good luck to you!

Babs - the top schools are not desperate for good African American students because there’s plenty out there and they’re applying, not on race, but on solid academic acheivement. When applying keep in mind (based on 150K black high school graduates) at least 15000 are likely top notch students with both great grades and board scores. The competition among black students is strong and getting stronger.

For UCSC and Berkeley, race means nothing.

I respectfully disagree with you both …

race as well as class are very important factors in admission decisions especially at more liberal leaning schools like Ucberkeley. Admissions knows that there is a dearth in terms of people of color and poor people in higher education (Berkeley’s graduate sociology department is RENOWNED for its critical dissections of race, class and gender within American society) That is why it is widely known that berkeley seeks out applicants who are the first in their family to go to college as well as help prep african americans and latino students to enter cal through programs like Berkeley Tap, Experience Berkeley, and Starting Point Membership… Many institutions do not have this intersectional focus (on not only race but class) and seek to only further the racist and classicist elitism of higher education (most ivy league schools)
In conclusion: Berkeley is rad ;-)

Catria - I would like to tell you that I got accepted at:
UNC Chapel Hill
UC Santa Cruz
North Carolina State University

*Still waiting for Berkeley

For any public institution in California, race by law is SUPPOSED to not have any weight in the admission process. However, I do agree that socioeconomic status can have some effect.
