Hello. I am currently a sophomore in high school in metro Atlanta. Duke and Stanford are my dream schools that I would like to go to. As of right now, my cumulative GPA ( Average GPA of my freshman and 1st semester of sophomore year) and unweighted GPA is 3.33, and my weighted GPA is 3.5. I am working hard to increase my GPA to a 3.7 or higher by the time senior year starts (the time I start applying for schools). My current class rank is 50 out of 548 sophomores. By the time of graduation in 2016, I will have taken 8 AP classes throughout high school. I participate in cheer at my school (By the way I am really passionate about cheering). I also am looking to get into DECA, Spanish Club, the National Honors Society and MAYBE....FBLA. I haven't taken the SAT or SAT yet, but I am preparing and will take it junior year. I would like to know what I need to do in order to be more appealing to these colleges and in I am on the project track I need to be, will Duke or Stanford accept me?

I think your GPA is a bit low for the two universities. if you can get your gpa to 4+ you have a shot. What is your SAT score.

Welll since your GPA is way below average you’re going to have to do extremely well on your tests to compensate. try for at least a 2300 or 34. Your ECs are a little lacking, so join clubs that relate to your major to show interest.

Do any of the top schools (some of interest: UNC, Duke, Vandy, the Ivys) take your transcript and calculate their own GPA that may differ from the unweighted one that the high school provides?

MBenz23, I am still currently a Sophomore in HS, so i have about 2 1/2 years to improve my GPA. Hopefully, it will become a 3.7 bu the time senior year starts. I haven’t taken the SATs. I won’t be taking them until junior year.

sloth83, Thanks for the advise. Like I said before, I am still a sophomore in high school, so I an trying to improve my GPA and I am sure that I can do it. As to your question, the counselors at my school send your class rank, weighted and unweighted GPA to the colleges that you apply for, regardless if it is an Ivy league school or not.

*advice.

Stanford is a very high reach even if you get 3.8+ in GPA and 34+ in ACT. You may want to see if you have any hooks. It seems your GPA and class rank are far from making you standing out from other applicants. There are plenty of students with 4.0 GPA, AP scholar, NMSF, etc got rejected every year from Stanford.

Counselors send your entire report. Most colleges calculate GPA for themselves, because some high schools have different ways of calculating GPA. Just keep doing your best. If you must aim, aim for all As. Otherwise, yes, participate in major-related clubs, competitions, and become a leader. Good luck!
