what are my chances of getting into duke?

ok i just finished my junior year and have a 3.83 weighted gpa. my sophomore year i had a lot of B's but junior year i really raised my gpa and got straight A's.
-I am on my high school's competitive cheerleading team and i have a passion for it. we have won state both years i've been on varsity and ranked top ten at uca nationals. This year i made captain :) I hope to cheer in college (probably not competitive cheer because a lot of colleges don't offer it)
-I am also in national honors society and do quite a bit of volunteer work.
-I will be teaching sunday school next year to elementary age kids at my church.

GPA is solid, ECs are narrow but somewhat deep. It depends largely on your SAT scores. What did you get?

It’s about rank, not GPA. Top few percent would leave you Duke competitive with an SAT around 2200.

i took the act, not the sat. i will find out my score in a couple weeks! so hopefully i did ok? do u know what a good act score would be for duke?

^ Go to their website and look at the admissions data for the students accepted for the Class of 2013. Ideally, you want to be around the 75% range for their test scores.

i got a 31 on the act and i think im gonna stick with it!

GPA and ACT score are too low. ECs are not good enough to compensate. Duke is going to be a big reach.

do u think i should retake the ACT? or would a higher score not even help my chances?

A 31 ACT is not THAT big of a reach. Duke is probably a low reach for you. This is contingent on your class rank, however.

im in the top 20 percent  im hoping to increase my standing senior year by taking four weighted ap classes, but it may be too late…

Higher scores always help but the big issue here is rank. Kids at Duke not in the top 10% are athletes, URMs and legacies.

i know cheerleading as a sport is controversial; however, im wondering if being apart of a nationally ranked competitive cheer team would help my chances… and am planning on cheering in college

I think it is a good EC, but I don’t think it is the same as a recruited athlete.

31 ACT is weak, but you may still have a chance!

thanks for all the feedback!

I don’t know, cheer might be important enough at Duke for the coach to have some pull with admissions. Are you in touch with the coach?

nope i havent but thanks for the advice!

Try to retake your tests if you can, it will really help. Your ECs are little in number, but they appear to be passionate. I think you will have a pretty good chance at Duke provided that you get good recommendations and write good essay. Also, have you considered applying ED to Duke, I’m positive you will be accepted if you do.
