What are my chances of getting into Georgia Tech with a low GPA?

So I am currently a senior in high school and I have already applied to Georgia Tech. Here is some info about me:

GPA: 3.3
SAT: Math 700 Reading 620 (1320)
AP Courses:
Sophomore Year: AP World History
Junior Year: AP US History, AP Physics, AP Lang
Senior Year: AP Calculus, AP Lit, AP Macroeconomics, AP Physics 2, AP Psych, AP Drawing, AP Photo

I applied to Georgia Tech’s College of Design because I want to major in Architecture. I heard somewhere that it is easier to get into the college of design than it is to get into the main campus. Architecture is something I’m extremely passionate about and Georgia Tech is my top choice!

My GPA went down due to two consecutive deaths in the family that really affected my mental state. I specified that in my application. However, I do show an upward trend and am taking all 7 APs this year.

I will also submit my art portfolio which I am working very hard on and I hope the admissions committee will consider while reviewing my application.

Tech is definitely a reach school for me but I am incredibly passionate about it and my GPA does not define me. What are my chances of getting in?

If you scroll down, you will see the average stats for College of design. It will be hit or miss depending on your portfolio. You have the right attitude. Like GPA, don’t let GT admission define you either.

Thank you so much! I will surely check it out!

According to last years admission data the College of Design, and especially Architecture, actually had a lower admittance rate than the overall average. Total admittance rate was only 17.3% and even for in-state was only 22.6% which is well below the general 40% admit rate for in-state.

Is your gpa uw or weighted? Even if it is uw, only ~2% of incoming students had a gpa in that range or lower. Your test scores are below the 25th percentile but not completely out of the range of accepted students. One wild card is your portfolio, as I don’t know how much weight it can carry in your admissions decision. It does say that a portfolio is optional though.

Your chances are very low. Depending on how much weight admissions gives to your explanation of the extenuating circumstances, it could help, but if your explanation came off as more of an excuse rather than a mature reflection on the circumstances, it could also hurt your application.

Both your GPA and your test scores are on the low end and those weaknesses are probably not something you’re going to overcome. Your portfolio will be reviewed by faculty from from the College of Design, so if they think your portfolio its prodigious, that could do it. The fact that you’re still working hard on it at this point (it’s due by February 1st) doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence though.

Unless you think your portfolio is stunning (have any people with a design background given you such positive feedback on it?), I would not bank on getting into Tech as a freshman. There are transfer pathways for those who don’t get in as freshmen, so you may want to look into those. That’s likely your best bet at this point.

Also was the explanation of your low gpa just addressed in your app or did your GC address it their recommendation? It would carry more weight if your GC addresses the issues you were having.

It’s worth an application, you have nothing to lose. Don’t go in with any expectations, though. Your grades and SAT are good, and you might have a pretty decent shot at UGA too.
