So, recently I’ve been stressing out about getting into NYU (Stern school of business). I intend to major in global trade. Also, I’m planning on taking the SAT and ACT again, but here are my stats.
GPA UW: 3.7
GPA W: 4.7
ACT: (havent taken yet)
SAT: 1100 (will take again)
Class Rank: 96 out of 650 (in top 15%)
APs: By the end of senior year I’d have taken 10 AP courses. I got a 3 on the one I took sophomore year.
ECs:
-DECA Member ( 3 years)
-National Honors Society (1 year)
-National Spanish Honors Society (2 years)
-Interact Club: Treasurer (2 years)
-Student Government (1 year)
-Debate (1 year)
-French Honors Society (1 year)
-Students for Social Justice (1 year)
-Femenist Club (3 years)
-Musicians Club (1 year)
-Track and Field (1 year)
I assume that I’m going to have good recommendations and essays as well. I’m a son of Mexican immigrants, I speak 6 languages (English, Spanish, German, French, Russian, and Sign Languge), I’m also in the college board program Capstone, and have traveled to many European and Latin American countries. Will this help my application?
Ok, this is 12-1 in the MORNING! Chill.
The unweighted GPA is a little low side and SAT is not high enough for SAT. As for ECs… I am confused. You are all over everywhere. What are you looking to study? Have you invested your time in whatever your interest is? URM can only so much help if you don’t have one or two specific things that shows your interest.
NYU is very competitive and Stern is even more so. Your SAT needs to come up several hundred points to hit the 1410 average for NYU admission - which means half the admitted students scored better than 1410. People have done it but it will require a lot of effort. Kahn Academy is great and will be a helpful way to study. You could also explore a private tutor if that is an option. Kahn is free and can be very effective. NYU like most very competitive schools does not accept a 3 on AP tests (they require a 4 or 5) so these scores will not be helpful. Not trying to be a downer but I would try to find other options you are as passionate about and put a lot of effort towards prepping for SAT/ACT.
NYU is known for having some of the worse financial aid; can you afford $72k per year?
Sorry to burst your bubble but your SAT is just too low for this school and your rank does not help.
Find a school that will appreciate your efforts.
Nope- NYU is going to be a no-go. But that’s okay - there is plenty of time for you to find a school that is a better fit for you educationally and academically. Look at Hofstra University - good business school - you will still get that city vibe, the financial aid will be MUCH better, and there will be a great diverse culture of kids there. Academically it is much more within reach for you.
I don’t know that I agree with everyone saying you don’t have a chance of getting in. Now, I got into Steinhardt for Educational theatre, so I don’t know how these stats would have translated to Stern, but here were mine:
GPA UW: 3.3
GPA W: 3.95
ACT: 32
SAT: (didn’t submit but 1300)
My school doesn’t rank
AP classes: 1
On paper it looks like I wouldn’t get in, but my admissions counselor told my college counselor that she hasn’t seen anyone more perfect for this program. That was because I’ve been doing theatre since I was 3, and especially because I’ve been working and teaching in children’s theatres constantly for 4 years. I also emailed my admissions counselor throughout the process with updates of things going on in my life (like interviews I got for the radio station I run, my senior project, a trip to New York) and continued to express interest. NYU isn’t so cut and dry, they’re looking at people, not numbers. It might be a reach, but it could definitely happen.
@STF4717 can she still apply to schools, and can she still take SAT I thought most schools closed applications except for some rolling admissions. How do we find out what schools will still accept applications at this point. Thank you.
