What are my chances of getting into Phillip Exeter?

Hi! I’m going into seventh grade this year…To give a brief summary, next year I will be taking Precal and Latin 1, and will take Honors Biology and English 1 in eighth. My passions include piano and art. I have won 1st in the state twice for piano…once in poetry, and twice in musical composition. I also love science, getting a top finish in the state science fair. I go to a public school in NC that’s for “extremely gifted children”. I’ve already taken my IQ test (for the school)…around 146. I don’t know if that counts but I’m just putting it on the table in case…I haven’t taken my SSAT yet, but I hear it is very important in applying to private boarding schools…hope I do well :-S I also play school volleyball and club, its great!
Thanks in advance for your reply!!! I really appreciate it :stuck_out_tongue:

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT trying to brag, just trying to give you a kinda background sorta…wanna know my chances

I also understand that the admittance rate is super low, I’m just wondering…

Hi @oli_fuzzypanda
First, when and for what are you applying? Are you applying this year for 9th? I think you are applying next year… So I will give advice based on that assumption :)… As long as you keep your grades up, you have changeling courses and those will help you… Your EC’s are good… Do you do any community service? or something similar? You have an year get involved in something you are really passionate about… I am not sure if your IQ test will really help you :-?? … But yes SSAT’s are important (but not a determining factor) judging by your next year’s course load you should do well in them… But buy (or borrow from your local library) a couple prep books… They are all really easy concepts but that reviewing and menial practice can really help your score… They (some of them :P) have good advice… Depending on how good you are at your sport … Contact the coaches and send them demos of you playing… If you can get a coach to advocate for you than you have a big advantage… Coaches have a lot of pull in admissions… Also a tip… start working on your essays early… DON’T rush them… Try to maintain good relationships with your teachers and students (teachers notice everything) you will need their recommendations… Give your recommends time… Tell them that you plan to ask for recommendations a good 2-3 weeks before the deadline… Teachers are (surprisingly… or not so :P) busy people…Be sure to write thank you notes after interviews AND to your teachers who recommended you… Good Luck ! :-bd

Are you considering applying to any other schools? If not, why? Perhaps if you are a legacy I understand that some legacies feel a strong personal connection to a particular school so that school is it or nothing. I also think that some people follow a go big or go home approach. However, if you are keen to have the boarding school experience, you may want to investigate a few other schools as there are no guarantees with admissions.
