I really want to get into UC Berkeley. I’m an out of state student. For the most part my transcript is all As except for a few Bs sprinkled in. The main thing I am concerned about is the fact that I have only received Bs (and one C) for all my math classes (all of my classes have been honors). I think I have the ECs to back up my application as well as a 1450 SAT Score (in the process of retesting). I want to be a Comp Sci major in the LSA school. How likely am I to get in and does anyone have a success story of someone getting into Berkeley with similar stats (preferably someone you personally know).
If those are your math grades you might want to reconsider your strengths and why your doing CS
If you’re sure CS is your major then go for it, but don’t do it because of job security and/or high salary
UCB L&S does not admit by major. If you are admitted to UCB L&S, you will be undeclared, and will have to earn a 3.3 college GPA in the prerequisite CS courses to declare the L&S CS major.
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1903428-faq-uc-historical-frosh-admit-rates-by-hs-gpa.html can help you with admission rates by HS GPA, but be aware that there is no need-based financial aid for out-of-state students, and large merit scholarships are rare and extremely hard to get.
I am a great programmer and love Comp Sci. I just am not the best at actual math and don’t know how much it will hurt my application.
Thank you! I’m really lucky that finances aren’t really a problem for my family. What stats does the LSA Berkeley program usually accept?
Have you calculated your UC GPA (capped weighted and fully weighted)? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
As an OOS applicant, only AP/IB or DE courses will count for the extra honors points in the GPA calculation. Also UCB does not give financial aid to OOS students so expect to be full pay at $60K/year to attend.
Here are the required classes for CS to declare the major in L&S:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Students admitted to UC Berkeley Fall 2017 or later:
Math 1A (Calculus I) *can be satisfied with at least a “3” on the AP AB or BC Calculus exam, at least a “5” on the IB Math Higher Level, or at least a “B” on A-Level Math
Math 1B (Calculus II) *can be satisfied with a “5” on the AP BC Calculus exam or at least a “B” on A-Level Further Math
EE 16A (Designing Information Devices and Systems I) or Math 54 (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations)
EE 16B (Designing Information Devices and Systems II)
CS 61A (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs)
CS 61B/BL (Data Structures)
CS 61C (Machine Structures)
CS 70 (Discrete Mathematics and Probability Theory) *Math 55 is accepted for math/cs double-majors, but CS 70 is recommended.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
So there are 3 Math courses you need to pass along with having a minimum GPA of 3.3 for CS61A/CS61B and CS70.
See the thread linked in reply #3.
Is there any way to show Berkeley admissions that I was in Honors classes (even though it won’t count in my GPA)?
No there is no way to show the UC’s your Honors courses since the UC’s have an approval system to determine if they meet their Honors criteria. The # of UC approved Honors courses vs. AP/IB courses available for in-state California students is small so it will not make a significant difference.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Honors courses are calculated differently. In calculating an out-of-state student’s GPA, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses. The weight is given to letter grades of A, B, or C.

I transferred in with relatively bad stats. I wrote about it here: http://angelokwek.info/uc-berkeley/
My kid made it into L&S CS intent also with a couple of Bs in his AP Calc BC and a C in his Honors Pre-Calc. The C was under extenuating circumstances though. He admittedly is not very motivated by math (or any other classes in his HS for that matter). However, he did have an 800 for the math portion of his SAT and also Math II Subject Levels, and a 36 for the math portion of his ACT. And got a 5 on the AP BC test. His SAT was 1540 and overall ACT was 35.
Assuming your UC GPA is somewhere in the 4.0-4.1 range, you’ll definitely want to be well north of 1500 for your SAT in order to be a viable candidate. The math grades may hurt but can be compensated for with the aforementioned standardized test scores.
Finally, If you took more 4 or more AP or dual enrollment classes in your 10th and 11th grade, the fact that your math classes were not AP is somewhat immaterial in terms of calculating your UC Capped GPA.
@ComputerSci2019 berkeley is a reach for, like it is for everyone, but hopefully your ECs can pull through. OOS might be harder though, and you have to consider if you want to spend over 60k for an education here.
Anyways I dont think that honors count for OOS but APs do.
I luckily got in for the college of engineering with Mostly As and some Bs, mostly in math and science classes
I also had a 1490 and a couple of decent ECs
If I were you, get the SAT as high as possible, atleast 1500, and make sure you display your actiivites and essays as best you can.
GOOD LUCK!
