Hey all-
I am a California Community College student in the midst of the transfer process. I am looking to transfer to UC Davis with an English major with a 3.3 overall GPA, 3.27 transfer level GPA. I have applied to TAG Davis in English-and have been told that because English is not a competitive major that it will not be as hard to get my TAG approved.
Mostly what I am worried about is the fact that I took a lot of creative writing classes at my CC and not a lot of literature courses. I am signed up for my first literature course in the spring of 2020-but it is only one. I have taken three creative writing courses-and have gotten A’s in most of them, but I am afraid they will see this as taking “easy” classes and not admit me.
I have gotten all A’s and B’s at Community College except one C in speech (I simply hated the class and skipped class a lot of the time-it was deserved)-without the C my gpa would be a 3.5. I am hoping this semester I can get more A’s than B’s and boost my GPA.
There is also a bit of a monkey wrench thrown into this scenario. In fall of 2017 I was a freshman at a small liberal arts college in Salem, Oregon called Willamette University. I took a medical withdrawal a semester in-nearing Thanksgiving break- following a two week manic episode and was hospitalized for five months in an outpatient psychiatric hospital with other adults. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder type 1, and when I was released from the hospital I decided not to return to my liberal arts college due to lack of healthcare. I proceeded to enroll in community college-and am now looking for transfer.
I talked about this in the “additional comments” section of the application-obviously-explaining why there was a gap in my education.
My question is: Do you think colleges will see my mental health journey as a sign of perseverance and strength or a liability? And do you think my gpa is even high enough for my TAG to even be considered? Any comments would be appreciated
