UC Davis without TAG?

Hello. I'm a transfer student at a CCC and I wanted to know what the chances are of me getting admitted to UC Davis as a Psychology major without the TAG. My gpa isn't that high right now (3.0) and I do have a shot at getting a 3.2 by the end of this summer semester. However, realistically speaking, I believe I'll only get a 3.18. This won't qualify me for TAG. Can I still get admitted with this GPA? Thanks.

i believe you need the GPA by the time you transfer. i may be wrong.

I think Davis said that majority (if I recall correctly, something like 70%) of their admits are not TAG. I’m not sure why there is such a low utility rate for TAG at Davis and of course that may change now that transfers are only allowed to TAG with one campus.

Do your best to get TAG but don’t stress if you don’t make it. Transfer GPA for noncompetitive majors aren’t stratospheric at Davis so you should be ok.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse or anything, but do any of you believe that only being able to TAG to one campus will help applicants like me? I’ve contacted a Davis rep and she said that for regular apps, they look at your fall grades, so I still have time to bring it up.
Has anybody on CC gotten into Davis with my GPA? I have a 3.8 in the pre-reqs required for my psych major, just a lower cumulative gpa. Will this help also? Sorry about all the questions, I’m trying to figure this out.

I actually got in without a TAG, but I was put on the waitlist. They only raised that TAG gpa because of the insane amount of TAG applicants this year. So, it doesn’t mean their general admission GPA is 3.2

yeah, that’s what I was worried about. I was kinda scared that general admission just got more competitive. I wonder how UCI will change their GPA for tag also :|

You want to hear something funny…? I raised my GPA from a 2.4 to a 3.0 in one semester taking 22 units in two schools while going to Pharm Tech schools just so I can TAG with UCI. And now that I got it, news of them changing the required GPA came to destroy my world. HAHA.

The TAG with one campus will most likely drastically increase the admit rate for those with “middle-of-the-road” GPAs (3.2-3.5) that were not admitted to their UCs of choice last year. A lot of transfers were admitted last year with sub-3.2 GPAs at various UCs thanks to TAG. Of course, you can only attend one UC, so this will probably also balance out the enrolled vs. admitted rate as well. Case in point, UCSD had so many TAG-applicants that the regular applicant cutoff was unusually high (~3.8ish) - I know several people who were waitlisted with 3.6s (no TAG) but got accepted to UCLA (and chose to attend there) while many were admitted with ~3.0s to SD. It’s in UCSD’s best interest (if they want high GPA transfers) to limit the TAG applicant pool to those with GPAs over 3.5. Of course, the same goes for Davis (3.2 is their cutoff, I believe). This will give non-TAGers a fairer shot at entry, if say, they don’t qualify for TAG by Fall 2011.

Two things:

First: UC Davis has an odd condition for their TAG contracts, and that is that you must have or will have all of the lower div. for your major completed by transfer. I didn’t meet this requirement so I didn’t get the TAG. However, I still got in.

Second: I was accepted into the college of biosci, Neurobio major with a GPA of 3.3

iwillflyby: I know! I’ve done something much less drastic than you, but I’ve brought my GPA up from a 2.6 (i was 16 years old and a bit too confident) to about a 3.0 and I’ll bring it up to a 3.1, 3.2 if I’m lucky this semester. I’m 17 now, and I’ve learned a lot in the past year haha. The fact that they might be raising it is also keeping me down, Irvine was my backup if I didn’t qualify for the 3.2 Davis TAG. I would have TAGed to Irvine and applied as a regular applicant to Davis. I’m really disappointed, I’m sure you have an idea on what that feels like. :frowning:

asphyxiac: So basically, this will work in my favor? I really believe I have a decent shot at Davis. I’m a psych major so I’m sure it’s not THAT competitive. I see what you’re trying to say and honestly, it’s really given me hope (and motivation) to try my hardest.
A 3.0 isn’t very strong, but I have this semester to bring it up to a 3.2, if not, then I do have fall, which will be much easier for me.

tymhill: They do? I was worried about that! I called my Davis TAG rep and she said that I only need the required classes listed on the TAG criteria along with the 60 units requirement. I only have about 5 required classes, 3 of which I’ve completed. The other two will be completed by the end of Spring 2011. Congrats on getting in!

Bump! lol.

UCSD now requires a 3.5 for TAG. 3.2 isn’t that bad. It also depends on your major and if it’s impacted. If it’s not I would say you have a decent shot.
