What are my chances of transferring into RISD?

I am currently an international student on a leave of absence in SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) and is planning on transferring to RISD as a graphic design major (currently studying visual communication.)

I have a good grasp on dry mediums but not so much in painting. All my artworks are at a level where got me into many accredited art colleges in the past (MICA, PRATT, CCA, etc.) My artworks tend to show a lot of variety in subjects and dry mediums. However, I'm still in the progress of completing my portfolio for my transfer application this march.

My grades on the other hand, are stable since the last two years I've been in SAIC. Since SAIC has a CR/NCR grading system, and a "CR" means a C and up, I've always been keeping my grades above a C.

I am certain that my professors in SAIC would write great recommendation letters for me. In addition, I am confident that my TOEFL score will be at minimum of 93 when I apply with my 2 essays and the 2 home tests that I will be submitting...

My main concern is:

I'm really frightened by the fact that I've heard about the low acceptance rate in RISD for either freshmen or transfer students...

What does it really take for a student to get into RISD as a transfer student? Does it really depend on the department in which I will be applying to/ the space that's available for transfer students/ or simply just depends on individual student's ability in getting in?

Probably all of the above. RISD is thought of very highly, which is why the acceptance rate is low (34%). Many think it is one of the best art/design schools in the country. So make sure you have other schools in mind that are easier to get into in case this one does not work out.

Good Luck with you application. I wish you the best!

SAIC is a comparable school to RISD so I think you will have an easier time transfering in that someone transfering from a non-art school. With that said, I think your portfolio must be very strong and your grades need to be good (all cr is good, you might want to email RISD to see if they will need grade reports with an actual grade on them however.)

Are you in the US? If so I would recommend attending the nearest National Portfolio Day and talking with the RISD table there. They will look at your portfolio and give you recommendations on what you can do to make your application stronger.

Hi! I am transferring as well (from a UC) and want to go to RISD. I was already admitted to SAIC but it doesn’t feel like the right fit for me. I would love to hear about your experience though and why you are transferring. I havent submitted my RISD application yet and I am so nervous.
