What are my chances of transferring to UCLA?

I am a CCC poli sci major that just submitted the UC app for UCSD (TAG), UCLA (TAP) and UCB. I am pretty confident about UCSD, and I am just going to assume that I won't get into UCB so that I don't get my hopes up. What I am worried about is UCLA.

My GPA by the end of this fall will be (if I ace french) a 3.61 and if i get a B in french, a 3.55 (all my other grades this sem are guaranteed A's). I know that isn't very high, however I had one semester where I was having a lot of personal problems (plus being a fulltime student athlete) and it really affected my grades. My counselors told me not to worry too much because it is VERY obvious by looking at my transcripts that it was an isolated incident (the semester before was all A's and the ones after are mostly all A's with an occasional B). I mentioned this in the "additional comments" section of the application. Needless to say my GPA would be waaaay higher had it not been for that screw up.

My personal statement received very good feed back from my counselors and my English 3 Honors professor (who has apparently read many personal statements before), I have done a lot of community service and I used to work at a US embassy in Asia, which i tied into my personal statement. I also talked about how i have lived abroad and travelled a lot. I am a student athlete and as the TAP suggests, an honors student. Also, I have aced all of my "major prep" classes (which I am assuming is just the classes that are needed to transfer and are relevant to my major) so my major prep gpa would be a 4.0. Finally, I wrote that my father is a UCLA alumni which I am sure will help a little bit even if they won't ever formally admit that legacy counts. Oh and I have completed all of my pre rec except for Poli Sci 2 which is only offered in the spring anyway and I am already enrolled in it for next sem.

So honestly, what are my chances? A UCLA rep told me that I was good but I am still freaking out. I put Classical Civilization as my alternate major but I REALLY want to go there for Poli Sci which I know is highly impacted. And I don't really want UCSD, I want UCLA or UCB. Thanks for reading my annoying rant!

Political Science is a very impacted major at UCLA and your GPA is way below average admitted.

[Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2012 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof12_mjr.htm)

I think your in for sure at UCLA. I was accepted for Political Science with comparable stats–GPA and TAP–when I applied for transfer. If it weren’t for TAP, I’d say your chances would be 50 percent.

Also, legacy doesn’t matter at all for UC’s.

Thanks so much for the feedback, if you don’t mind could you tell me what your GPA was? Just want to know where i stand haha

With TAP I think you’ll definitely be admitted to UCLA. That being said, I’m not so certain about you getting admitted as a Poly Sci major. If I had to bet on a probability I’d take a conservative 50%. Normally, with a GPA that a good .15-.2 GPA points below the average, especially to a heavily impacted major I think your chances would be slim. But, given that you’ve really done well in your major pre-reqs and that you’ve completed all, but one going into spring I think it shows really favorably for you. Ultimately, I think it comes down to your personal statement and how compelling and unique it is. If you’re really able to sell your interest in the major and how you’ve improved since that one bad term then I think you’re in. Good luck!

Alternate majors allow your application to be reviewed again for the second major in the event that you are rejected for the first major. So, I’d say in the event your rejected for Poli Sci, you’ll be accepted for the alternate major.

I had a GPA of about 3.5, but may have been as high as 3.6 (I’m not sure b/c I have multiple transcripts that include grades in non-transferable courses, and I don’t want to calculate it exactly). Also, that was my GPA after my last term before transfer, so my GPA at the time I applied for transfer may have been a little higher.

My personal statement was done at the last minute so while it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t particularly strong. But, I completed 4/4 major prep courses (one during the spring) including Intro to Political Theory, which isn’t offered at every CC.

I think your in. Finish your last term strongly.

After doing some calculations, my GPA after the fall term in which I applied was exactly 3.5 in 70 transferable semester units. It went down a bit after the spring term, but those grades only matter in the sense that bad grades will get your admission rescinded.

Oh ok that is a bit reassuring. What was your major? did you TAP?

I have no idea how the minds of admission officers work, but if I were one of them I would definitely say “yes”.
If the information you provided here is full and there’re no random “black spots” on the app they you haven’t mentioned on the forum, you will be SIRing to UCLA in a couple of months.(IMHO, you are good for Berkeley)

Viva la raza!! Aztec
