I just got an updated class rank for sophomore year, and my counselor pretty much implied it would be nearly impossible to get into Texas A&M or Texas Tech at this rate. Because My freshman year was a 2.8 (I was kinda dealing with some family funerals and those took up a lot of my time), and sophomore year I got a 3.5 and this year, 1st semester of junior year, I am about to get a 4.6+. However this only would bring me up to a 3.42 for my fall GPA. And we just had some(like 60ish) new students transfer in at the start of this semester. They most enrolled IB and at my school because most are foreign, and at my school a 70 in IB is the equivalent of a 90 in AP. And I’m not allowed in more than 2 IB classes unless I’m am a senior. My class rank went to top 29%. I feel confident I can get 4.8+ next semester, but if I do the math, unless at least 3 people drop out of the IB program, the highest my rank can reach is 2517% junior year (with this and next semester being 4.7). So I need to become a review applicant. Here are my stats.
Cumulative GPA over time 2.8 > 3.15 > 3.42 (1 semester)

Does this mean getting into tamu is pretty impossible at this point? Because that was my weighted GPA. I haven’t even calculated by unweighted one.
And If it’s not, does this mean I will struggle in the engineering program? I’ve been told without a 3.5 minimum it would be virtually impossible.
And if so, would it be bad to aim for engineering honors?
