What are my chances to transfer?

Hi all,

I want to transfer from ACC to UT Austin Computer Science program. Before ACC I have been in other colleges and universities overseas.

I transfered credit to ACC and now I have 36 hours done at ACC.
My current GPA is 3.417; this will increase by next semester.
I have several A, B, and 2 C.

I am doing one more semester at ACC and in May 2010 I am getting my Associate's.

I think the deadline to transfer at UT in fall 2010 is March 1st.

In Spring 2010 at ACC i am taking Logic, Calc I (again got a C i wanna bring that up) and BIOL 1407. (I love sciences so that's not problem). I got A's in mostly all CS courses.

I am not typical student. I am almost 30 and i dropped out school many years ago in order to work and support my family and parents. Then while working, I decided to start college again, taking 1 to 2 courses while having 2 jobs. (that sucks big time!)

That's why i have some C's from my other colleges because sometimes I missed exams and others. I guess I should explain that in my essay but I don't want to give excuses. Anyways, I need some advice.

I worked few years in IT in Australia, so my resume is not too bad... I guess.

At the moment I am not working because I am determined to get my Bachelor's at UT.

I am Hispanic.

I am vegetarian. (i don't think that counts!)

I haven't done any extra-curricular or community services... yet. I am looking right now in the web.

I am asking my teachers at ACC to help me with some LOR also.

Well any advice will be highly appreciated. I know transfering into UT Austin is extremely hard, but I am a perseverant person.

I have known people who got into Natural Science and Liberal Arts with your GPA. If you can bring it up, all the better, but with 36 hours, they will probably go ahead and make a decision. Put something in liberal arts as a back up major and, if needed, you can work your way into the CS major.

I wouldn’t worry about EC’s too much. UT is very number driven in their admissions. There are simply too many people to do a truly holistic approach. I turned in no EC’s when I transferred from ACC other than Phi Theta Kappa, and I was only minimally involved there. I have EC’s but didn’t submit anything. All this to say, don’t stress over that. You are non-traditional (as am I) and your application will be non-traditional as well.

I wouldn’t make excuses as to your C’s but instead address them in a round about way. Instead, maybe use an essay to discuss how you worked while attending school and the challenges you faced. Spin it positively. School and work at the same time is an accomplishment of which to be proud.

I just noticed your screen name. Isn’t David Floyd a professor at ACC? Did you have accounting at Riverside by chance?

yes i think so. i didnt take accounting with him though.
floyd is my nickname anyways

One more question, did you complete the whole core curriculum? or just the associates?

You have a good chance, even more if your GPA goes up. I was accepted with a cumulative 3.47 to COLA :)

Thanks for reply. I expect to raise my gpa by the end of this semester, i hope. Meanwhile, i will start my application to UT.
