What are my chances to UW?

I am currently in 11th grade, but I would like to know as of right now, if I were to continue on the same track with my marks or even possibly approve would I be able to attend the University of Washington? Also, since I cannot find a forum for the University of British Columbia could anyone tell me how my chances are for there? Last, what other universities do you recommend for me to research, taking into consideration that I want to become a doctor so I will be going into sciences. Also, I should add I am an East Indian male if that helps/takes away from my chances anyway.

I currently attend a private school in British Columbia, however, I am an American citizen with residence in America. My school does not offer any honor courses, but it does offer AP Lit and AP Calculus in grade 12. I will be taking both of those courses next year. I must add that our courses are the hardest level for what they are, for example we are required to take principles of math, the hardest level of math in Canada.

In 9th grade I got honor roll with an average around 83%.
In 10th grade I got honor roll with an average around 83%.
In 11th grade I currently have an average around 83% in first term. Right now, I study, but I am confident that i could raise my average to around 90% for the next two terms and the entire duration of grade 12, if not higher.

Here are a list of my extracurriculars:

Soccer – 6 years
Hockey - 10 years
Track and Field – 2 years
Cross Country – 1 year
Golf Team – 2 years
Skiing – 2 years

White Rock Hospital Volunteering – around 50 hours
Surrey Hospital Volunteering - around 50 hours
Save Delta Hospital Safeway Sales – 4 hours

Honor roll throughout high school
Archimedes(Math) Club – 1 year
Jazz Band – 1 year
Saxophone – 4 years
Traditional Indian Dance – Bhangra – 4 years
Multicultural Night Participant – 4 years

Grade Level Winner of School Wide Speech Contest – 10th grade
National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine – 11th grade summer

I realize it is hard to tell without any SAT test scores, but any feedback would be appreciated. Is the SAT basically what will break/make my chances in getting in?

Also, my father is a doctor. So he could hook me up with the possibility of shadowing his colleagues. Do you think this would really help my application?

Once again, all feedback is appreciated. Also, if you have time please recommend some other universities that I should look into. Thank You.

bump, anyone please. would really appreciate it =)

Basically impossible to say without a standardized test score.

I think you're on a good track. Not sure how to translate that GPA into a 0-4 GPA.

I agree, hard to tell without an SAT. How well have you done on standardized testing in general? They won't exactly correlate, but can give you a general idea of how you'll do. Have you taken a practice SAT?

You have enough ECs that I doubt job shadowing will help much unless they'll give you substance for your essays, which are supposed to really important at UW.

As for what other universities, what exactly are you looking for besides a good science program? Location, size, public/private, etc?

I have done the provincials, my average was about 84% on my grade 10 provincials. I didn't study much at all for them, but I think I can do much better on the SAT's if I study a lot. I have also taken the PSAT, but I haven't got my results yet.

Other than a good science program, I prefer a larger university, I don't have a preference on location, or if it's public/private.

With my grades now, and if I were to get a very good SAT score, what is the best possible university I could go to? Do I have a chance of getting into any of the UC's?

UC's and UW don't operate on a % system... you're going to have to translate what an 84% means on a 4.0 scale.

84 is a B, which = 3.0...at least at my school. I'm not sure how how it works up in BC.

yeah, my school only has A, B, C, and F's. We don't have any +'s or -'s and we don't have D's. So I guess the gpa would be 3.0?

please do this. get all your grades in front of you. if u got a B, that becomes a 3.0. if you got an A, then its a 4.0, etc. then calculate an arithmetic mean and tell us what it is

My overall GPA is about a 3.4. I think I can get it to about 3.5 before I apply to universities. Also, I heard that the UC's don't look at grade 9 scores, is this true? I think I could have a 3.6 GPA if they don't consider grade 9. Depending on my SAT score, what would be the best possible universities I could have a chance at getting into?

Hmmmmm, Irvine or Davis might be okay chances if you got around 1900 on your SATs.... You'd need at least 2000 for UCSD.

With a 3.5 GPA, you have a good shot at the University of Washington (average GPA there is about a 3.46).

However an 83 would normally be a B- in the US (except in Canada it doesn't work that way--so I think your 3.4 estimate is a lot closer--and is why the rest of my comments will be based upon this.) (P.S. I'm not going to go into why this is, since the explanation is too long for this time of the morning).

Other schools that are possibilities based upon a 3.4 GPA (but need good ECs and SAT scores) and that have good medical schools (you have to get your BS first, of course, at most colleges):

Ohio State
Penn State
UC Santa Cruz (priorities go to California residents, however)
Indiana University
Purdue University
Seattle University
University of Oregon
University of Colorado
Lawrence University (slight reach, maybe)

Good luck.
