I am a rising junior and really want to go to U of M - LSA. What do you think my chances are?
I am OOS and go to public school in NY and everyone it seems wants to go to Michigan!
Thru first two years i have all As and just 1 B+
UW GPA: 3.97
Weighted: 4.25
ACT diagnostic i took with no prep and I got a 33 so I am aiming for a 34 or 35 when I take the actual test in the fall.
Classes I am taking junior year:
Honors precalc
Honors english
APUS
AP Spanish
AP Bio
Journalism
EC
Tutoring/mentor progam in lowincome area (club in school that I have participated in for two years. Next year I will help run the club)
Model UN - won distinguished award for best country research paper
Plan to be on school newspaper junior/senior year - journalism is big interest of mine
Work with special needs kids, coaching them in soccer program
I also am legacy - my mother, grandmother, grandfather and uncle all graduated from LSA.
What do you think my chances are and what can I do to improve?
Legacy helps. If you can bring up your score as you said, you have a decent chance although the OOS admission rate is low. It should be a very low reach for you.
With you Legacy, I would say Match/Low Match, you have great credentials.
Just a note that with the size of UMich alumni network, legacy is not that uncommon among applicants. The OOS admission rate is around 20% in average. No OOS student can claim UMich as low match in any case. Even match is very hard due to the low admission rate.
As OOS, you are correct to aim for a 34+. Although a little late now, try to focus your EC’s in one area. Seven activities that were all related to breast cancer or the homeless is more impressive to colleges than a list a page long of all different activities. Schools can tell when you are building a resume vs being truly involved. Good luck!
You still have time to retake tests if really needed, and with your legacy it could be a match. keep up the work next year. i’m aiming to get in in-state but i know oos is a whole new ballgame. gooood luck
