I am a junior and U of M is my first choice – I would apply to LSA. What do you think my chances are?
OOS (NY)
Legacy (my mother, uncle, grandfather and grandmother all went to U of M)
GPA: Unweighted GPA will be around 3.86 on the Michigan unweighted scale (this includes junior year grade estimates). Weighted my GPA is 4.24. I will have only 3 B+ grades. All As otherwise.
Rigor: I take all Honors/AP classes for both 10th/11th grades - so highest rigor possible in my high school.
High School: I go to public high school that is very competitive. I guess that I will be in top 5% of my grade.
ACT: Have not taken yet. On diagnostic, I scored a 33 so I am hoping for a 33-34.
EC:
Model UN - won award in 10th grade for best country research paper
Tutoring Club - grades 9-11, this year I am Director of the club
School Newspaper - sports editor
I also work for a local newspaper as an intern in their high school journalism program
Volunteer teaching soccer to autistic children
Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society
Michigan is my top choice - I know OOS is very competitive. What do you think my chances are?
I think you will be accepted or deferred during the first round of admissions, but you will most likely be accepted in the end, considering that you get the score you expect on the ACT, however, this is based on my experience from people who got in last year form my school(which is instate). Another thing that helps you is that Umich accepts a very large amount of OOS, I think its around 60%-65%.
@slg2017 If you get a 32 or above on ACT and you write good essay and supplemental essay and demonstrate interest by either visiting Michigan or attending a local admissons function when an Admissins representative visits either your school or the New York City metropolitan area, you’re in! Legacy is looked upon favorably if you have the stats—and demonstrated interest plus high standardized test score and high gpa with rigorous courses are a formula for successful admit!
Note that your GPA is right below the admission average of UMich. They consider GPA to be most important. But if you are within the top 5% of your class, it is probably okay. ACT 33 is the admission median. You are among the average of OOS applicants and the admission rate is around 20% or lower. Legacy helps, but UMich has one of the biggest alumni population and legacy is rather common among applicants.
