UW GPA/Rank: unknown
W GPA: ~4.2 on a 5.0 scale, will definitely be 4.2 after 1st Senior Semester
Top 10% for sure
I’ve taken pretty much the most rigorous courseloads, excluding the 2 electives I take every year. I go to a medium-size, competitive public high school that’s known for being pretty/moderately hard. I’m an Asian female on the East Coast lol

SAT I Score: 2370 (first sitting) 770 M 800 CR 800 W
SAT II Scores: 790 US Hist, 790 Lit
PSAT: 231
AP Scores: APUSH (5), AP Lang (5), AP Calc AB (4), AP Physics (2; not reporting it!)

I have a lot of extracurriculars and a decent amount of awards/leadership awards. I won’t list them here because I don’t want to make this too long! (I have them in my other chance me thread if you want to look, though).

I’m applying to schools like UChicago (EA), UPenn OR Columbia for ED (still deciding, leaning towards Penn), Johns Hopkins, Cornell, UCLA/UCB (OOS), NYU, and a handful of safeties just to name a few. What are my chances for schools like these and other top/selective schools? What would you recommend putting on my list? I know I’m not a straight A student (and the C+ is the one thing that’s really worrying me), but I think I have shown consistency and improved a little bit throughout. My strengths are probably my test scores and ECs. What do you think? I’ll chance anyone back! Thanks!

bump! any suggestions?

Your schools are probably reaches from what it looks like because your GPA is slightly low. UCLA and UCB are reaches because you are OOS. It would be more helpful to see your ECs, because if those are exceptional they could significantly help for admissions. Chance back?

Thanks @kobe24mamba I will chance you back!
Any other suggestions? Bump!

I don’t think the UC schools are reaches. A 2370 SAT is wicked high and your subject tests are also extremely strong.Your weighted GPA isn’t really what matters at these schools, they will take your transcript, exclude PE and Music, and then using 4 for A and 3 for B recalculate your GPA on a 4.0 scale. The mechanics might vary from school to school but it will be something like this. Getting into an Ivy League school as a student without any legacy or athlete or URM hook requires either superb essays or a strong unweighted GPA with a curriculum with rigor or both. I don’t think one C+ is going to hurt you, if anything it shows you aren’t a machine, but there are more B grades on your transcript than is ideal. My D appiled this year to a handful of Ivy’s with a perfect ACT and a 3.82 unweighted GPA. Looking at parchment and other data sources leads me to believe that the students with perfect test scores and 3.9 or 4.0 unweighted GPAs do better in admissions than the students with slightly lower GPAs. The tipping point for you is going to be your essays and extracurricular activities. At this point it is probably less about what you do then how you package yourself and the quality of your essays. The one piece of advice I would give to students like you applying to these hyper selective colleges is to limit yourself to no more than 4 or 5 applications and to spend an inordinate amount of time crafting a compelling application that is tailored to each school. For target and safety schools your stats alone will win the day so you really don’t need to spend too much time on supplemental essays.

@Wje9164be Thanks so much! Your advice pretty much confirms what I was going to do and how I was going to approach the admissions game.

I agree with @Wje9164be that the UCs are not reaches for you. Being OOS actually helps your admissions chances, but not your pocketbook. Your test scores give you a very good chance of getting into at least one of them. As for that C+, don’t worry about all too much because it was when you were an underclassman And your 770 math score essentially offsets it. For schools like Columbia, UPenn, and UChicago that will hurt, however.

Here are you chances in my opinion:
UChicago (EA) - reach
UPenn (ED) - low/reach
Columbia - reach
Johns Hopkins - low reach
Cornell - low reach
UCLA/UCB (OOS) - high match
NYU - high match (Depends on major, would be harder for business at Stern)

Would you mind chancing me?

Since you’re OOS you will forsure get into pretty much any UC, although UCLA and UCB are heavily applied to so if you don’t get into those colleges it’s because of the sheer amount of people that apply, not because you aren’t qualified

Here is what I think:
UChicago: Reach
UPenn: Low Reach
Columbia: Reach
JHU: Low Reach
Cornell: Low Reach
UCLA/UCB: MATCH
NYU: Low Match

Could you chance me back? Good Luck! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1798840-chance-me-for-ucs-ill-chance-back.html#latest

UChicago: reach
UPenn: low reach
Columbia: reach
JHU: low reach
Cornell: low reach
UCLA/UCB: match
NYU: match

Your SAT score is superb, as is your course rigor. I think being OOS for the UCs is definitely going to help you. In my personal opinion, the C+ won’t affect your chances too much. Obviously a C is not ideal, but it’s better to have a C as a freshman or sophomore rather than a junior or senior. Your SAT subject test scores are also competitive enough. From the sounds of it, you’re good to go with your ECs as well. The only issue is your GPA. A 4.2 W GPA isn’t bad, but it makes it seem as if your UW GPA is on the lower side (however, I don’t know the accuracy of this). Is it possible for you to ask your guidance counselor what your UW GPA approximately is? I would try as much as possible to make sure that you get all A’s in the first semester(s) of your senior year. Overall, your GPA and grades (the B’s most of all) are your weakest areas. I would try to improve your overall GPA and grades as much as possible this year so that you are competitive amongst all of the applicants. Good luck!

Chance me back please??

Good luck! And thanks for chancing me!

Bump! Thanks for all the responses so far. I think I’ve calculated my UW GPA to be around a ~3.65-3.7. Any other suggestions based on this?

bump! I hope I’m not being too annoying, but would anyone calculate my unweighted GPA based off the detailed stats I gave? thanks so much! I just want to make sure I’m doing it right

@shadyconcepts Based on the info you provided, and assuming your school uses the scale A (regardless of sign)=4, B=3, etc., your UW GPA is 3.67. Assuming your school provides extra point for honors and APs, your W GPA is 4.38. Your UC UW GPA is 3.64, your capped standard/fully weighted UC GPA is 4.21. UCB and LA look like low reaches to high matches for you. Good luck!

But, AP score may send off grade inflation warnings in Physics. C in PCH will hurt you just a little.

Even though your gpa is a little low, I feel like your SAT and AP scores will definitely help compensate for your gpa. Maybe you can even try to explain why your grades dropped on the common application. It will show the admissions officers that you had a legitimate excuse rather than just slacking off.
Chance back, please?

@SATsRuinLife thanks! chanced you!

Also, if it’s not too much to ask, chance me back? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1808236-chances-for-rice-rd-will-chance-back.html

Your test scores are great so like others have said before, it compensates for your GPA. Just make your essays great, and I think you’d have a really good chance at your top schools.
