What are my chances?

I applied to UGA for the fall semester as a Computer Scientist. I attended Clemson last semester, but i wasnt able to attend this semester because of tuition cost. I was on track to become a Computer Engineer. Im Black, and im a resident of Georgia. My Highschool GPA was a 3.98 and i was ranked 31 out of 430 people. My SATs where low. Overall i got a 1540. Math was 490. CR was 520. and Writing was 530. I played football and tennis in highschool, and i was in the National Honor Society.

Last year I applied to Clemson, Ga Tech, V Tech, and the Citadel. My first choice was GT but i didnt get in. I got into all other schools to become an engineer though, and Clemson was my pick. Im just kind of worried, because I keep hearing that UGA is being super selective like GT was last year and really my only other options are schools like GSU or Ga State if i dont get into UGA...

Have you checked with Admissions to make sure that you are eligible to apply for Transfer Admissions?

Since you have attended another college, you are not eligible for freshman admission. And sophomore transfers are required to have at least one complete year of college completed, which is at least 30 credit hours. I believe the transfer process looks only at your college grades and not your high school information. But you should have Admissions clarify that.

I’ve copied and pasted the requirements from the UGA Admissions site:

https://www.admissions.uga.edu/article/admission_information_for_transfer_students.html

Requirements to be Considered for Transfer Admission

Transfer Update for Spring 2010 and Future terms

Junior and Senior Transfers (with 60 or more hours of transferable credit) must meet the new requirement of a 2.80 or higher transfer GPA to be considered for admission, though there is no minimum GPA that guarantees admission.

Courses not used for standing

Remedial, developmental or career associate degree courses
Seminars, workshops, practicums, colloquia or internships
Failed or repeated classes (but grades will be used for transfer GPA)
Courses taken at a non-regionally accredited college
Courses taken at other University System of Georgia colleges to remedy CPC deficiencies
A “D” or below in English I; a student must have an average of “C” or better in both English I & English II
*Below are the current transfer admission requirements for consideration for admission for Summer and Fall of 2010. However, there is no minimum GPA that guarantees admission. Transfer admission criteria are subject to change. Transfer admission is on a space available basis.

Junior and Senior Transfers

Have 60 or more hours of transferable credit by the application deadline
Have completed at least one year of college by the term of intended enrollment
Must have a 2.80 or higher transfer GPA to be considered for admission, though there is no minimum GPA that guarantees admission.
May be eligible for admission to University of Georgia undergraduate programs in Tifton or Griffin.

Sophomore Transfers

Have 30-59 semester hours of transferable credit by the application deadline
Have completed at least one year of college by the term of intended enrollment
Must have a 3.20 or higher transfer GPA to be considered for admission, though there is no minimum GPA that guarantees admission.

Students with fewer than 30 transferable hours are ineligible. Must have at least one complete year of full-time college enrollment resulting in 30 or more transferable hours by the transfer application deadline to be considered for transfer admission to the University of Georgia.

Before I applied I called the admissions office and told them my situation. They told me i could apply as a freshman, but none of my credits from Clemson would transfer. I would be starting over.

If you are applying as a first-time freshman, your SAT scores are low. Did you take the ACT?

Here are the stats for admitted freshmen:
SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students 1800 - 2080
SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students (CR&M): 1190 - 1360
Overall SAT-I Average of Admitted First-Year Students: 1263
ACT Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students: 27 -31
Overall ACT Average for Admitted First-Year Students: 28

I think it will be tough when you will be compared against incoming freshmen. Is there any chance you could go back to Clemson and complete enough hours to get to 30 so that you would be considered a transfer student? That may be an easier route.

Just saw that you are not able to go back to Clemson because of tuition costs. Your options then are proably to go to another school and then try again as a transfer student.

I took the ACT but that was worse than the SAT. Ive heard UGA is a better school than Clemson. However, dont you think me getting accepted to Virginia Tech and 2 other schools as an engineer mean anything?

When exactly did you apply? And what is your status on the admissions site? Is it showing that your application is complete for example?

I am surprised that they are allowing you to apply as a freshman since you have completed a semester of college.

UGA will look at either your best SAT score or your best ACT score. They won’t super score between the two and take math from one and CR from the other for example. Unfortunately your SAT score is 400 points lower than the average score from the 2010 class. As gamomof3 suggested, your best option might be to complete 30 hours of transferable credits, have a high gpa, and apply as a transfer student.

UGA won’t know or consider your other acceptances from last year as a factor.

Best of luck to you.

UGA doesn’t really care what other schools you have been accepted to because they don’t use the same criteria.

Were you accepted to UGA previously and chose to attend Clemson?

your gpa is awsome and i think being an underrepresented group in engineering your chances are pretty good!

i have a question about GT. I’m currently applying as a freshman and my GPA is way lower than yours. Did you spend a lot of time on the essay? Also, did you have any other extra-curriculars while you were in high school? I also posted a thred on my chances it would be great to get some of your advice!

Thanks :)

@somewhereinga On the admissions site I says my application is complete. Ive sent my essay and letter of recomendation. Its all green except 1 yellow, and that is for my Clemson transcript. However yellow means that this item isnt needed. I technically didnt finish my first semester at Clemson anyway because my tuition was never paid in full, and they wont release my transcript otherwise.

@gamomof3 I never completed my application to UGA last year, because i didnt want to go. UGA was almost at the bottom of the list on my choices of school because they didnt have a mechanical engineering program.

@geo1234 Thanks for the encouragement. I spent a good bit of time on my essay. Everything I stated earlier in the post I put for extra curriculars. GT was just super harsh on acceptance last year. I heard they werent taking anyone with lower than a 2100 SAT and I have some friends at Clemson who were wait-listed or denied, and they had way better scores than me. One was ranked like 5 in his class and made a 1900 on the SAT and he got denied. Im glad i didnt get into GT though, I really dont think I would have met as many people or had as much fun as I did when I went to Clemson.

What are you planning to major in now?

computer science

UGA admission is very competitive and I wish you luck on the rest of the process. I would just advise that you have a backup plan in place just in case you are not admitted.
