What are my chances?

I got a 1980 on my SATs (690M, 630V, 660W)
I did terribly on my SATIIs with a 500 French, 530 Math IIC, 730 Biology
I got a 4 on the AP Bio test

I think I have a 3.6 unweighted GPA and a 3.7 or higer weighted. At my school, GPAs can’t exceed 4.0. My average is about a 95 which is probably a better GPA at other schools.

I’m not sure about my ranking because my school doesn’t use it. Junior year I know I was one of the top 8 in the class because we were featured in the graduation but I don’t know about now. My guidance counselor marked top 10% on my applications, though.

In my junior year I took AP Biology (online), Honors English (AP didn’t fit in my schedule), and AP US History. This year I’m taking AP Lang&Comp, Honors Gov. and Ec., AP Chemistry (online), Honors Calc, and Honors French V. I’m also teaching myself Spanish because Honors Spanish V is the same period as Honors French V. The only AP classes I didn’t take were AP Physics (I took physics junior year though) and AP Lit&Comp (because of scheduling).

My credits are as follows:
Science:6
Math:5
Foreign Language: 8 (4 French, 4 Spanish)
English: 4.5
Social Studies:4.5

My ECs are:
NHS - 9 to 12
SNHS - 9 to 12
FNHS - 10 to 12
Senior Class Treasurer
Lit. Magazine - 9,12 (Co-Editor-in-Chief)
Yearbook - 9 to 12 (Section Editor & Staff Writer 9,10,11; Chief Financial Officer & Senior Editor 12)
Newspaper - 9 to 12 (Staff Writer 9,10,11; Editor of Entertainment Section 12)
Track and Field - 11
Model United Nations - 10
Environmental Club - 10,11,12 (unofficial treasurer)
Reading Olympics - 9,10
Middle School Book Club - 12 (Founder; ran for 7th and 8th graders)

I know my SATs and SATIIs are really low but I have no chance to retake them now…what do you think my chances are?

3.6 isn't the same as a 95... that's a pretty big difference. But if your GPA is a 3.6, that in combination with your relatively low standardized test scores and relatively average extracurriculars doesn't make you a particularly strong candidate.

Doesn't mean you won't get in. It'll take some kind of extra push (amazing essay, some kind of cool talent or extracurricular you didn't put down here, etc).

I think my GPA was done wrong because I get a 3.85 when I calculate it myself. But my guidance counselor refused to reevaluate my GPA so there's nothing I can do, which sucks. As for extra talents, I've written 3 novels and I'll definitely have 2+ more done before the end of the year. Would that help?

Both of those things (higher gpa and novel writing) will definitely count in your favor. If writing's a big thing for you, submit a poem, short story, novel chapter, or something with your application.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't sure if I could submit a short story as an extra thing when it says to send something like artwork but I guess I could always try it out.

Anyone else have anything to say about my chances? Anything would help me. I really don't know how I compare to other Cornell students or applicants.

Well, this is the Brown board... so we won't have much to say about Cornell students or applicants.

MAJOR typo there. I meant Brown. I was looking at the Cornell viewbook at the same time I was doing this...whoops

I figured. :) just be careful not to do it on the application!

If you truly think your GPA is supposed to be higher, you should go to the principal, or other school administrators. That difference in GPA would be huge, and you want to know for sure. If it ends up you're wrong, no harm done. BUt if you're right, ...

Also, if you were top 8 in the class junior year, mention than in the "extra info" part of your application.

I put the top 8 info in my resume because we were called Cord Bearers (we got to be human versions of those metal poles that hold the cloth covered ropes when making lines and special paths). Also, do you think they'd look at my 95/100 average, too? I know my school is weird in that we can't go over 4.0 meaning everyone's GPA is lower so do you think they'll notice that 3.6 and 95 don't really match up? Both are on the transcript.

2220 SAT I
700 math II (yuck)
740 math I (shameful)
760 bio (ehh....)
690 chem (want to commit suicide)
720 physics (not bad for a 9th grader..)

97.5% gpa (3.8?)

rank 10th... except my school doesnt report it

Junior year

This year:

My credits:

Social Studies:3.5
Art: 2

My ECs are:

FNHS - 11 to 12
FIRST Robotics team image director (officer position)
Dream FIRST -Children's book (head illustrator) and comittee head
taekwondo
piano

JETS president

hows that? is that at all a fighting chance? --- couldnt make the 99.99 gpa... shameful T_T

also
AP scores are all 5s for bio, us hist, english lang, and chem

should i have posted this in a separate thread? i just didnt want to crowd this place...

Yeah, you should definitely post your stats somewhere else because only people searching your specific name will ever locate this. Anyways, I think you've got pretty good test scores. How is a 740 in Math 1 shameful? LOL What is your involvement in your ECs? How long have you been doing it? Do you only have one leadership position? What schools are you looking at?

FIRST robotics 11th and 12th grade
officer 12th grade

Dream FIRST 11th and 12th
head illustrator 11th and 12th grade
