what are my chances?

So right now I am incoming senior and will be applying to colleges soon. I wanted to know what my chances are in getting into college as a musical theatre major. As of now I have a 2.7 average gpa and aiming to get an 1850/1870 on my SAT's. Extra curriculars: did some community theatre, did my school musical for two years straight, auditioning for the fall play, and a couple school clubs I did through out the year. The colleges I'll be applying to are nyu tisch, syracuse, ithaca, pace, uc irvine, csu fullerton. If all else fails ill audition for amda or think about the boston conservatory. Even theirr hard to get into talent wise. So what are my chances?

Realistically your GPA is too low for NYU, Syracuse, or UC Irvine. But for most programs it is all about the audition.

Not sure where you live, but I believe CS Fullerton is giving preferential admission to Orange County residents- if you live nearby you might be in luck. Also BoCo’s admissions are very competetive artistically, although not so much academically. What is your training background- vocal lessons, dance, acting experience or coaching? It is hard to give you odds without knowing more about your training. Right now, your list only includes 1 non-audition program for which your grades fit, and your location might make Fullerton difficult. . I would come up with a few non-audition safety programs, as well as more programs that are a fit for you academically.

My training includes almost a year of vocal lessons. I’m planning to start improv lessons soon. And I have done a total of 5 musical theatre shows.

You don’t mention dance at all. Do you have any foundation in dance? If not, you need to quickly find a studio where you can take a few basic ballet lessons. You don’t have to be a master dancer (although of course it wouldn’t hurt!) but for those schools who do dance calls, you need to at least have some familiarty with dance terms and basic moves. Ballet would be the best place to concentrate with so little time left. If you do have some dance already, then try to find somewhere you can brush up on it. Auditors want to see that you have some potential, and can understand directions. I also always think it is useful to get some outside “validation”- some honest opinions about your talents from an outside source that can give you a better idea of your chances. It can come in the form of a theater where you are not known, a competition of some sort, audition coaches, etc. You can get a much better idea of your chances from someone who sees you perform than you could from us here on CC. And again, you really need to expand your list of schools, All of those you listed are extremely competitive-some only admitting 10 or 12 students each year from all over the country. You need to include some schools that are maybe “not as big name but not necessarily of less quality” and more that mesh with your GPA. Good luck!

Oh in peter pan the only reason they cast me was because I stood out as a dancer! I mean I have the rhythm and can dance under direction. I know some basic dance steps. And I was the lead male dancer in a part of a show. I want to go to a school where they will train me because I’m still under developed and I wanna reach my potential. If I thought I was the best of the best I wouldn’t be auditioning for schools. But I want really want that training. Thanks!
