What Are my Chances?

Hello everyone, I am a American virn asian junior in high school and I live in Kentucky which means I am out of state. Can I get into UNC with a 31 Act and with A+B grades? I have 70 service hours and also have a small graphic print company that is register as a LLC under my name. I am on track, service club and chess club. I have been hearing things like URM and stuff. Does that give me a advantage cause I’m asian? Many thanks!

Sorry for misspelling

Hello Hiram, I think you have a good chance to get in. You have good ACT score and outstanding business (I think this might be rare!) the only thing I think you need is to mention your company and provide UNC that you actually run that company. And if available, remember to get a good rec letter and write a good essay.

Good luck!

On one of your other threads you mention having an ACT of 33 – which is it, 31 or 33?

You also mention a 3.6 GPA on one of your other threads – is that weighted or unweighted?

I wouldn’t get your hopes up about OOS admission; UNC by law only can accept no more than 18% of OOS applicants; and unless you are a recruited athlete, having an LLC registered in your name is probably not going to cut it – although only the admissions committee will know for sure. (You might look on the UNC website at the track roster, and try to determine whether your times are competitive, for example; perhaps your track coach can send something in on your behalf.)

Why is it that you want to attend UNC – is there some program that you really want to study there, or is it just the prestige? You might want to expand your universe of potential schools – for example, if you really want to go OOS, perhaps Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (another of the “public Ivies”) would be a good candidate; or if you wish to stay in-state, there is an excellent LAC in Kentucky at Centre College.

The guidance counselor at our school likes to say that you shouldn’t find one school that you love, you should find several schools that you love. Look for those other schools as well as UNC.

UNC accepts 18% of OOS applicants. If you include transfers, 25% of students are from OOS. This year there were approximately 25,000 OOS applications for about 4500 spots (about 800 attend). In comparison, there were about 10,000 in-state applicants.

I would apply, but I would also find a few other schools that you like and where your chances of getting in are higher. Good luck to you!

thanks!
