What are my chances?

Hi, I really want to go to brown, but I did not apply ED so I could have more time to work on my application. My gpa is really low, 87. I know you need around a 3.8 to 4.0 for these schools, but I really worked hard junior year to bring up my grade. Freshman year was really hard for me. I went from around an 80 freshmand year to around 90 or 91 junior year (I was really sick on the day of my pre clalc. final and got an F, this brought down my gpa around 2-3 points, I had a 97 for pre clalc 4th quarter, I explained this in my common app). My act is a 33, andI have 5’s in AP US, Euro, and Bio. Unfortunately a 3 in AP stat. My essays are really good, and my extracurriculars are great, I did research on parkinsons diseas (electrical engineering- signal processing) and other research at a university and am co publishing a paper. I founded the first model UN in my school. I Was the head of the only high school team in a competition hosted by nasa, we went to the semi finals. I also won awards in swim team. I have 2 letters of recommendation from 2 college proffesors to go with my 2 reccomendations from school. I also have a 790 in SAT U.S. history. I also have a low income background, I dont know if that helps. Basically I have a pretty solid application exept for my gpa, but I took the most rigorous classes- all honors and AP’s since 9th grade. My course load for senior year is AP clac, AP government, AP ecenomics, AP physics, AP English, and Italian(the one class where I could not raise my grades).

Also, my first quarter senior year was really low, because I had so much going on with tests, research, school, etc.- my grades are mostly 80s, but I am raising it to all A’s 2nd quarter.

I applied ea to uchicago

Other schools that I am interested in are john hopkins, carnegie mellon, boston college, tufts, cornell.

My guidance counselor said that my best shot now is to apply ed II to NYU, she also said that I could most likely get into BU and Brandeis.

Do my low first quarter senior grades kill my application? Does it help If I bring it up to all A’s second quarter?

I know my gpa is really low, but with the rest of my application, do I have a chance at these selective schools, especialy brown?

Thanks

I also got a 95 in psychology junior year, forgot to list that

Anyone?

You are obviously a smart kid and you’ve got some interesting ECs.

However, that GPA is not just low, but down in the range where highly selective schools are going to question your ability to survive the workload. Anything can happen, but I think your chances at the types of schools you listed are basically zero. Go ahead and take a shot at your favorite if you want, but you need to focus on schools that aren’t quite as selective.

What schools do you think would be a match to high match, i know my gpa is low, but i did manage to bring it to a 3.6 - 3.7 on a 4 point scale, thanks

You are talking about 2nd quarter senior year, right? What’s your overall GPA now? And is that unweighted?

My overall gpa before senior year is an 87 uw and 91.5 w, my school only has the gpa before senior year. My first quarter of senior year is in the mid 80s, I know, its bad. But I am bringing it up to all A’s 2nd quarter.

I think I have a good shot at ed II for NYU, but is there anywhere above NYU that I would have a chance?

In junior years I had A’s exept for 1 or 2 89’s

Anyone?

OK, it’s good that you are getting it in better shape 2nd quarter, but given the bad first quarter, your overall is probably not going to rise very much.

An 87 is about a 3.20 on the 4.00 scale, FWIW. Like I said, this really is going to kill your chances at the top schools, because they have tons of applicants with test scores and resumes similar to yours who also have high GPAs.

The good news is that, except for your GPA, everything else looks pretty solid, and there are going to be plenty of very good schools that will be willing to take a chance on you. You just have to be more realistic and find them (and also bear in mind that you need the school to come up with sufficient financial aid that you can afford to go there.)

Honestly, off the top of my head, I don’t have a list for you. I think your best bet is to create another post over on the “College Search section” with a topic like “33 ACT but low GPA” and see what kind of help you get there. (And you also should indicate what major(s) you are interested in.)

Thanks!, one last thing, what do most schools (including very selective ones) think of someone who raised their gpa alot, I mean by 10 or more points from freshman to junior year?

Does anyone have an idea about this situation?

Hello?

I would recommend looking up schools ranked based on a major that you like. Some schools have great programs in some majors even though they are not ranked overall that high. Stony Brook is an example of one. So I would try to create a list while looking at a list of colleges ranked by a major that you are interested in.
I was just deferred from Brown but I thought I had a really good chance so I’ll see you in RD.
Best of luck

You should try HEOP for NYU since your a low income student.

And also can someone chance me plz.

Sat Superscore: CR(600), M(690), W(600)
Sat II: Math 2(650), Physics(550)
GPA Weighted: 91.82
Colleges: NYU HEOP, Columbia HEOP

what is HEOP?

@hello1221 Not great to be honest, considering how selective Brown is. Your test scores are definitely something to take pride in though, and there are lots of great schools that would be lucky to have you.

@Gatekeeper98 It’s in poor taste to “hijack” another person’s thread. Click the “New Discussion” button on the top right of this page if you want to create your own. In response to your question, just based on the stats you’ve provided, chances are pretty low. Your SAT score is below the 25th percentile for both and your subject test scores aren’t high (750+ would be expected). If you’re set on Columbia and NYU, you ought to have some pretty unique extracurricular activities and URM status. For some perspective, I’m not even bothering applying to Columbia with a 2330 because it’s that competitive. Find some more realistic schools, and I hope you make it in to one of them.

  1. What is HEOP
  2. I know I have very little chance at a school like brown, but do I have some chance, even if its not alot? (Also for UC berkeley)

Could really good essays help me with uchicago ea?
