what are my chances?

So I posted this awhile back and got almost no responses, so I'm trying again. I want to apply ED to CC.

GPA: 3.94 uw and 5 w
SAT: 690 CR, 790 M, 700 W (64 MC, 12 essay) = 2180
I'll be taking the Math II and Chem SAT IIs in October

I've taken 6 AP classes so far, gotten scores for 5 of my exams, I have 3 5s and 2 4s, which means AP scholar with distinction. I don't know if that will help at all.

I got the national merit commended thing, won't know about semi-finalist till the fall.

Extracurriculars:
*Gymnastics, since the age of 5, have been J.O. state, regional, and national champion (in the trampoline and tumbling discipline)
*Track & Field, since 7th grade, hold 3 school records (long jump, triple jump, 4x100m), have been MVP, honorable mention for MVP, and gotten the Coach's Award
*XC junior year, and possibly senior year
*German club since sophomore year, was treasurer junior year, co-president for senior year
*Jewish Culture Club since its founding my sophomore year, leadership position guaranteed senior year
*Student Legislative assembly since sophomore year, environmental committee co-chair senior year
*Science Olympiad, junior and senior year, came in 1st, 4th, and 5th overall at regionals (I was JV then), came in 5th at states
*Envirothon, junior and senior year
*Drama club, was in the Sound of Music junior year, will costume Alice in Wonderland senior year
*I've been working at a coffeehouse for almost a year now, I'm a barista

I was inducted into German Honor Society sophomore year and National Honor Society junior year (but the honor societies at my school aren't very active).

My school was number 9 in the nation based on Newsweek's listings my sophomore year, my junior year we were 53, but we're still top 100.

I'm not a URM, but I don't think North Carolina is all that well represented at Columbia; will that make a difference?

yes it will make a difference...i think your GPA is great and although your SAT is high, I would recommend going for 2250 if possible. I had a friend that got a 2200 and was freaking out because it is so "average" for Columbia, and I agree.

ECs look good as well as the fact that your school is so highly ranked. All you can really do to better your chances is give the SAT another stab. Good candidate.

If I retake the SAT in November, will those scores be looked at for ED?

Hmmm good question. ED is due in November, right? That's pretty close so I'd retake in October if you can or earlier if offered (don't remember the dates) or ask an admissions officer.

October is for my SAT IIs, that's why I was asking about November. I don't think it's offered between now and October, which is lame. I'd take it in August or September if I could.

yeah i feel ya there...maybe consider ACTs if you want, since you could take them in the same month as your SAT IIs and have them for back up...if you scored a 34 or above, that would be considered better than your SAT score and would be convereted into a higher SAT score.

your november scores can be used for ED...

i was wondering the same thing, arent november scores too late for ED?
ed deadline is the 15th, while the test day is the 4th..is it possible to get scores before the 15th?

First of all, the deadline is November 1st, not 15th. I called the UG admissions office and they said to take the SAT IIs in October because they take longer to grade. View your scores early online and fax it to them. Students can see their scores earlier than the universities. Although the faxed scores aren't considered official, it gives them something to look at. Take the SAT I in November and do the same thing.

I think your SAT scores should be ok...especially for SEAS, but for CC as well....especially if your SAT IIs come back strong then that'll make up for it. I think brand_182 is being a bit of a sensationalist with his thoughts on SAT scores.

I'm curious. What's wrong with scores that are just "average" for Columbia, if I still get in?

I guess that's what you mean about being a sensationalist. And I just wanted to thank you guys for actually reading this thread/giving me useful information about the SAT stuff.

if they are average for columbia and your application is strong in other aspects such as rigor of courseload and how well you handle it (grades), ECs, recs, and essay... i don't see why you couldn't still get in. average for columbia are still acceptable scores, and combined with the rest of your application you can still get in....your math is well above the middle 50s and the verbal is in range, so they're fine
