What are my Chances?

GPA: 4.1 (weighted=don't know unweighted)
Class Rank: 16/181

Toughest Course Load--senior year schedule (AP Bio, AP Gov, AP French, AP Calc, AP English Language)

AP: US History (5), English Lit & Comp (5)

SATI: CR: 800, Math: 720, Writing: 610
CR: 780, Math: 690, Writing: 690 (kind of worried about going down the second time around in cr and math)

SAT II: Lit, 780, Math IC, 730, US History 790

Extracurriculars--probably below average=about 6 clubs, marching band (really time-consuming like 25 hrs a week and section leader), piano for 12 years (some small awards), Camp counselor, Taught English in Taiwanese elementary school over the summer, pit/stage band (for the school musicale), about 700+ hours of community service with church, etc.

Ethnicity: Asian-American

I'm not sure if I'm aiming too high: in order of preference, not necessarily in order of difficulty to enter

Colleges:
University of Virginia (huge reach)
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (EA)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Emory
Barnard College
University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
Lehigh
Boston College (EA)
Rutgers (in-state)

Considering University of Maryland, Muhlenberg (PA), American University, TCNJ (in-state) but my mom thinks they would be a waste of my time

oh, yeah, I live in NJ...NM Commended, NHS, WLHS, etc...Academic Decathlon awards

I just need some match schools or probably some safeties

I think you look pretty good. If you really want Michigan, apply as early as possible as the rolling admissions will work to your advantage there. And you will have an answer in hand soon.

Really? You don't think I'm aiming too high?

i'd say you're about right, if not aiming lower.

alright, thanks. I think I'll just get in UMich and Rutgers for rolling and maybe I should just send all the common app ones just cause it's done...

wow, just came across this really old post and I was wondering, should I apply to those schools I was thinking about? University of Maryland (College Park), Muhlenberg (PA), American University, TCNJ (in-state)?

Random,

I would think you would get into all those schools. Add those 4 only if you want to go to one of them (you'd get in esay), otherwise fuhgettaboutit. Class rank is low, but with great SAT IIs, I would add some reach schools on the level of Georgetown, etc (just an example b/c it close to other schools you like). A 1520 SAT (old) is ridiculous; I think it would be wise of you to aim higher (if you want to).

I don't know why you consider UVa a "huge" reach...I'd think it's a match / slight reach probably and UNC to be a slight reach / reach

I'm not sure if it's readily apparant, but my GPA unweighted is actually pretty low-it's more in the neighborhood of 3.5/3.6--and all these schools have much higher GPAs listed on their website, etc. for their 25-75%, though I'm not sure if it's weighted (I doubt it). Sorry, I'm just a really, really cautious person, like completely obsessive.

Random, the GPAs posted on college sites are usually weighted. Colleges take class rank into account with GPA; being in top ten percent w/ a 3.5 should help. 3.5 means a lot of Bs (or Cs), is your school really difficult/ompetitive, or are you just a big fat lazy bum (like me) :).

It might be difficult but not necessarily competitive. I don't even know if my school's in the top 20 in NJ. Our valedictorian for sure does not have anywhere close to a 4.0 unweighted--I think she's got like four final grades of Bs through the three years--but our grade's not that hardworking. Anyway, I know there's at least 2 people out of the top 10% who have a higher old SAT score than me (both 1530s but still). And yeah, I am a big fat lazy bum, because I procrastinate way too much and then I do not believe in going without sleep :).
