What are my Chances ???

hey, i had a question at my chances at college. ha. i go to one of the best boarding schools on the eastern seaboard, st. james school. its a college prepatory school that runs off of the core-curriculum. therefore, i have had a limited access to ap classes but have taken as many as possible. i am also required to play three sports a year, therefore, making my schoolwork more challenging. graduating from the school itself is impressive, and wanted to know if yall thought i had a shot at any of the schools below:
upenn, nyu, uva, college park, carnegie mellon, georgetown and so forth... heres my stats so far. im only a junior. i might have a shot at playing soccer in college, if that would help anything... im also iranian!

gpa- 3.5 unweighted (4.0 scale)
sat scores- 1200 (low, i know, but have taken only once)

ec's- v. soccer squad (11,12), v. baseball (10,11,12), weightlifting, choir member (10,11,12), yearbook staff (9,10,11,12), yearbook editor (12), big brother program (9,10,11,12), tour guide (9,10,11,12), school newspaper (11,12), photography (10,11,12), spring musicals (11,12), community service trip leader (9,10,11,12), many hours of cs, national honor society (9,10,11,12), piano (9), multicultural club (11,12)

classes- AP US History, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Gov, AP Spanish

my top two choices are nyu, and upenn. what do i need to do to get in ???
please help!!!

Hi adyaragahi...welcome to CC!

It's a real benefit that you go to a high-quality prep school, since the curriculum there must be much more challenging than that of your typical public high school. Colleges won't hold it against you if you have limited access to AP classes, and it looks good that you've challenged yourself and taken as many as possible.

Three sports a year? Wow...they really do keep you guys busy! Colleges prefer students who are well-rounded, so this stringent school policy would work to you advantage.

You're GPA isn't too shabby, considering that you go to a rigorous school, but you must work on raising it your junior and senior year to become a more competetive candidate.

Your SAT score is pretty low for all of the schools you are interested in (below 25th %ile), so prep for that throughout the year, invest in a prep class or tutor if you can, but even so, you MUST take the initiative to study the tips and strategies on your own. Take practice tests in the study guides offered by Collegeboard, Barrons, Princeton Review, etc.

Also, ask your teachers for recommendations EARLY, like in the middle or end of your junior year. They really appreciate that because they have more time to do the recommendation, and they won't feel so swamped. And it will benefit you because they have more time to think it over carefully and write a glowing rec, not one that is rushed.

Your EC's are your strongest point (esp. the community service/vlolunteering)--you've been consistent and committed throughout h.s. and have had leadership roles in your activities instead of being a "joiner".

Here is my Safety/Match/Reach breakdown for you:
Penn: R
NYU: R
UVA: R/M
UM College Park:R/M
Carnegie Mellon: R
Georgetown:R

Sorry if that was harsh, lol. But if you raise your SAT (math + verbal only) into the upper 1300s, many of the reaches will become matches.

thanks so much for your help. does anyone else have any ideas ??

I agree, your gpa is great for your school and you got your ECs nailed...but you need better test scores

raise the GPA and SAT then write an amazing essay

Elbereth hit the nail on the head. I completely agree with her. Sadly, all the schools you mentioned were reach schools, and you stand the possibility of getting rejected from every one of those (this was what happend to a lot of our HS's students).

Don't forget some Safeties.

ya u should look into some safties
im sure u will have a chance at one of you top college choices
u will have a chance a UVA if ur instate (im sorry i didnt catch if u were or werent)
