What are my chances?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into the University of Pittsburgh. I'm an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

In about 3 clubs. I'm also planning on creating one this coming year.

Ethnicity: African American

So what do you think?

In (ten characters). Out of state, definite. In state, definite.

so as in definitely i have a chance?

You're on the low end. If you can get a good essay together or some letters of rec you a have a shot.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate the input.

Is there anything else i could do to improve my chances?

Being head of the club that you are making is a nice leadership position- are there anymore? How long were you in those clubs? Do you have any other ECs?

let's see.

I'm also a board member for another club (United Way).

I've been a member for all those clubs for 1 year because my old school didn't have many clubs at all.

I've been volunteering at my church since february an hour every other week

You have a good chance, but (as you've already recognized) if you get those SAT scores up and you have an even better chance. Go for it.

bump______________

bump______^_______

Based on the experiences of others you would probably get a quicker answer if you went ahead and applied! Some talk of a 2 week turnaround time when applying early.

With that being said: SAT reading should come up but an ACT of 28 is more than acceptable. Your GPA is on the low side but I'd be more concerned with the course load. Honors? AP? Have you taken Calculus? 2 or 3 lab sciences? How about letters of recommendation? All of these things can bring your application together. And as mentioned, state residency (?)and minority status are both in your favor.

Actually the Pitt application is really quick and easy compared to some others and and essay and recommendations aren't strictly required unless you want to be considered for applications. That being said, if you can write an excellent essay or get killer recommendations (or both!), you would definitely want to include them.

Wow a 2 week repsonse is very quick.

As i said, i plan to take the SAT and the ACT again and hope to do better. I have been prepping myself for this, seeing that this may be "my last shot". I'm hoping for a 30 on the ACT and maybe 1900+ on SAT.

I took honors in freshman and sophmore year in english, took 2 math classes at the same time within sophmore year (geometry & Algebra 2).
Took:
AP World History
AP US History
AP Physics B

I took all lab sciences. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

But unfortunately i missed the opportunity to take Calculus by about 3% last year. Therefore, I will be taking AP Statistics. Also I may take Analytic Geometry and Calculus at a Community college.

Additionally, I took a Computer Science class at our local community college.

I am out of state.

Good grief, I meant to say those things aren't required unless you're going to apply for scholarships.

ooh haha well it was more of an answer directed towards bluejay.

but most likely, i will apply for scholarships. =]

Good luck with scholarships, but please don't take the one I have earmarked for my daughter!

Thank You.

hahaha

So is that the school she is set on?

She doesn't have her heart set on it but she is interested in their creative writing program and does have (I hope) an excellent chance at a merit scholarship. Hoping for full tuition here or somewhere else or she will end up at U Washington, our state school.

well, i wish the best of luck!

Thank you!
