What are my chances?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into the University of San Diego. I'm an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

In about 3 clubs. I'm also planning on creating one this coming year.

Ethnicity: African American

So what do you think?

does anyone know anything about this school???

hmm it would be a for sure if your gpa was higher... my friend got in basically with those stats except the gpa was about a 3.4
i dont know, i'd it's a target school if you can write a really good essay, definatly apply for more back up schools though!

oh okay. well i'm trying to improve those scores too. hopefully, i can get my scores up maybe to a 30 on ACT. That should help me right?

yeah... maybe you can mention in the essay too why your gpa is so low too? also you can do really well first semester senior year (try and get straight As!) and then send them your midyear report to show you're improving. Really the only thing holding you back is the GPA but who knows. higher act score will alwayss help :)

Yes, i will definitely mention why my GPA is so low. And i plan on sending my midyear report, but will it help even if i'm doing early action??

oh okay. And yes, ACT is coming soon. I have 2 chances to take it. I ought to do better. And if i remember correctly, they take a "superscore"?

Your ACT score is pretty good and you are a minority - I think you stand you a very good chance of getting in. If your grades are good the first semester, you write decent essays and get some strong recommendations, you should have no problem getting in . Good luck!

Thank you very much sarsfield!

Your GPA is definitely on the verrrrry low end.....

Just curious what appeals to you about the school; my D is thinking of applying. Have you visited?

DON'T COME TO USD! This school is horrible. I transferred in to USD this semester and is going to transfer out of this school.

Yea, you are in San Diego, but USD is located on a hill overlooking Mission Bay. However, this school is extremely inaccessible to downtown San Diego. Furthermore, I had to walk 20 mins to the nearest pharmacy. This is insane.

Classes here are ridiculously boring and the professor doesn’t even know how to teach. My accounting professor teaches straight off the PowerPoint slides. There is no way one can learn accounting like that. He also likes to pick on students

Also, USD isn't diverse at all. It is full of rich white kids that are rude and ignorant. Also not welcoming. In every 10 students you encounter, 9 students are rude.

They require classes that MOST universities don't require (Logic, Ethics, etc).

I am out of here next smester!

Sorry that you aren't happy at USD. I see from your posts that you have transferred three or four times, and you have only been at USD for a month. You say that nobody in Taiwan has ever heard of USD. You say that downtown is inaccessible. You had to walk 20 minutes to the nearest pharmacy. You say classes are boring and you don't like the way they are taught. You say that you have to take Logic and Ethics, "etc.". You say the professor picks on students, and students are rich, white, rude, ignorant, not welcoming. (Except the one in ten, who presumably, are not rich, white, rude, ignorant and not welcoming.)

Whew! I was going to gently respond to these things, but I will just say that if this is your experience, then you really should move on. Good luck with your quest to find the right school for you.
