I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into Ohio State University -Columbus. I’m an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Next Year I’ll be taking
AP Comp Sci
AP Stats

I’ve already taken (didn’t do so well though)
AP World History - 1
AP United States History - 2
AP Physics B - 3

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

In about 3 clubs. I’m also planning on creating one this coming year.

My son had a better gpa,but had similar ACT,and was african american. He got in. He also recieved one of the Morrill Scholarships. I don't know what the exact determination for admissions year to year are ,but i think your chances are good

Your GPA is low for OSU, but your SAT and ACT scores put you within and above the median scores for last year's freshman class. Your AP exam scores are quite bad, but I don't know how much weight, if any, those carry in admissions. You probably have a reasonable chance of getting in.

The clubs are great, for any college. Whatever you're creating, make sure you have a passion for it so you'll make lots of great experiences and that, in turn, will make essay writing about passions/personal interests much easier.

Your SAT and ACT really are good, promise.

Getting that GPA up should put you as a solid match for Ohio State, and these days you want EVERY advantage you can get for OSU Columbus as a freshmen.

Do have some cousins in OSU and graduated from OSU increase the chance of getting in? and i am doing their online app now, and i didnt see any lines asking me to put down who had been to osu in my family

Ohio State is absolutely adamant about no legacy and/or donor considerations in admissions. There have been several instances in the last few years of the children of state senators and assemblymen being rejected. If that's the case having a cousin who attended certainly won't help.

I'd bet that you'll get in with the affirmative action stuff etc. taken into account. I don't know much about weighted GPAs though so maybe you should try to have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0

Your SATs are alright, enough to push you over the top with the race thing.

If you want to be an engineer be prepared to work hard, lots of people switch out of engineering because they aren't dedicated.

I lived with an African American guy freshman year, he got in with a 2.7 or so(I don't think his test scores were the best). You should be fine, it's a completely different ball game than what the normal admissions statistics would indicate.

Campus in pretty, but not in the Ivy-covered Gothic buildings kind of way. It is large, but you can pretty much walk anywhere. Most classes for undergrads are in the buildings at the center of campus, with the dorms going around the perimeter. North campus can be quieter, as can be the honors dorms, and south campus is considered more social, although the dorms there are somewhat less nice. Social life is pretty big, and there are lots of off-campus parties on weekends. Football and drinking are quite popular. The people there are reasonably diverse, and very "middle-class"-ish if that makes sense.
