What are my chances?

Your ACT score is at the lower range for the schools you’re looking at. Might I suggest taking the SAT? Your SAT II score for math (which level?) is relatively low as well. I would say that right now all of these schools are reaches, but hopefully you can raise your scores and write a compelling essay. Overall, these schools are hyper-competitive and most people’s chances are very low despite how well qualified they are.

i havent read all the responses but your ACT is kinda low. try and get a 33+. and since these are all reaches try and take some out and add some safeties. Depending on what you want to major in. Of the four, Yale, Duke, Brown, and UPenn I think it would be pointless to apply to all.

take out Upenn or Brown… good luck

ACT obviously needs some work, nice class rank and GPA though. But aim for a 34 to make the grades credible (some schools do grade inflation…).

And yeah, from what you listed the ECs seem a little weak. You say “significant ECs” though, which leads me to guess that you’re in some random clubs for breadth and you focus on your tennis/business/charity/music for depth. And, agreeing with Communist101, you really need some awards for music. Do you play music at school or just at home, as a hobby sorta thing? Also, you need to make it obvious that you, not your parents, established the business/charity. You’re applying for FA, which implies that your parents are probably working at their jobs, not making Johnny look good for Harvard. And if your business/charity has an income/donation that is substantial, then all the better.

Overall, I think Yale and Princeton and such are reaches, so be sure to have some safeties. jshain summed the whole thing up pretty nicely.

And thanks for chancing me…

bump…

Everything looks nice, but those top schools can be really random. I’ve seen ridiculous kids get rejected at those schools.

bump…

Ok, so you GPA isn’t that awesome UW but it is impressive W.

Your ACT is a bit too low. Have you taken your SAT? Because I’d STRONGLY Urge you too, it’s important for ivies.

Princeton Reach
Yale Reach
Duke High Match
Emory High Match
Brown Reach
UPenn Reach
Amherst High Match
UChicago High Match

bump…

If your essays are solid, you’ll be a good candidate at Chicago, Emory, Penn, etc. The top schools are still a toss-up

bump******

I would say depending on your recs and essay, you would have a good chance at all of them save for Princeton and Yale (which might be a bit of a reach).

nah i think just the opposite, you’ve got that one passion which is fantastic…I heard yale looks for a lot of those super-into-one-thing people so you’ve got a better shot at that than the other ivies on the list, i’d say

Definitely an impressive rank/GPA. Have you tried taking an SAT or are you just sticking with the ACT? If so, I’d consider taking several practice tests and really work on improving that score.

I think you have a pretty good chance in a lot of them.
I’m not sure about Yale and Princeton but the other ones look good.
You may not have a LOT of ECs but the fact that you created one yourself is pretty big.
Good GPA and class rank as many have said already.

oh and thanks for chancing me :)

bump…

bump******

How competitive is your school? What state is it in? Are you Asian or a URM? These all play major factors in the admissions game. Your class rank is awesome, but if you go to a relatively uncompetitive school, it won’t mean as much. We had kids get in to Duke who were ranked 15/~400 because our school is so competitive.
Also, I think your ECs are great, but not OUTSTANDING. A lot of people play tennis, albeit very few are captains; however, are you looking to be recruited? If not, then your tennis captain status will be demeaned a bit. The business could be a good essay topic though.
As for your standardized tests, your SAT IIs look great except for Math II, which you want to keep above 750 MINIMUM for it to look somewhat impressive due to its heavy curve. Your ACT is well below what many of the schools on your list want, so that will hurt you at the present. Get it to 33 or so and you’ll have a shot at the Ivies, but still a crapshoot.

Chances:
Ivies: High Reach
Duke: Mid Reach
Emory/Amherst: High Match
UChicago: Mid Reach

I agree with the above poster that even a 32 ACT wont do much for the ivies. Get it to 34+ and it will give u a good shot. Emory is your best shot right now with UChicago being a good chance too.

chance back plz
