Also let me mention that the trig course and pre cal course listed in junior year are each a semester course so they don't factor in to my GPA as much. Also under junior year the Graphics Img. Tech II class is worth 2 credits so it counts as 2 A's on my GPA. Estimated weighted GPA after junior year:
3.85 - 3.90.

My SAT scores: a 730 on my reading, 650 on my math, and 620 on my writing. I am on the varsity ice hockey team, do community service, can list a lot of awards, and have just a few clubs. I am also a minority (Asian - Indian Subcontinent). With all this stuff listed what are my match and safety schools? I know my stuff doesn't look as good as a lot of the other kids on this site so I'm not expecting to hear stuff like HYPMS or top 25 schools, just a realistic response. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

your question is too wide open. What kind of school do you want? Do you want to play college hockey? What are you interested in studying? Geographic preferences? We need more info!

How about you answer these questions (these are the questions I'm asking myself for college selection):

What locations do you want? (i.e. Northease, Southwest, etc.)

What type of campus do you want? (i.e. urban, suburban, or rural)

What size do you want? (i.e. ~5,000 students)

What type of atmosphere do you want? (i.e. liberal or conservtive, intellectual or athletic, etc.)

What do you think you'll major in? (i.e. premed, art history, political science, etc.)

Where do you want to rank in your classes? (i.e. do you learn better when you're the smartest in the class or when you're surrounded by people who are as smart, or smarter, than you are)

What type of diversity do you want? (i.e. large minority base, lots of international students, etc.)

Do you plan on going to grad school? (i.e. medical school, law school)

There are millions more questions you could ask yourself, but here are a few to get you started. After you answer these, it will be easier to give you college suggestions.

1) for location i'd like anything mid-atlantic to a little further north, so basically anything for virginia to massachusetts.

2) for campus i'd prefer urban but suburban is acceptable, really don't want rural.

3) for atmosphere i'd like a crowd of friendly students who generally lean to the left side of the political spectrum don't care if they are athletic or not long as they are nice. intellectuals preferred.

4) for major i want to major in history

5) for class rank i don't really care i'd like to be surrounded by people who have the same school abilities as me so being mid-class rank is just fine

6) for diversity i really want a lot of ethnic diversity. the more minorities the better...

7) right now i plan on going to law school afterwards but who knows...

woops i forgot to include size preference... umm i dont really care that much about size but 5000-10000 seems good and i dont about clubs or sports teams in college but if a school has good athletics teams for me to root for thats a positive...

Lots of Bs, not many honors/APs before senior year has you looking somewhere below the top 20. You would get into a higher ranked school in the MW or South where a lot of Asians don't apply. Try Kenyon, Oberlin, maybe Vandy as a reach.

What should I be trying to get on my SAT? Very few kids at my school were able to break the 2000 mark so I thought I was in pretty good standing as far as SAT scores went.

Before I dound this site I though my scores (2100s) werre good. It was the highest score my school had seen in several years. Then I relized how many people smarter then me are out there.

If you're white or Asian, and unhooked, you need to be close to the 75% in terms of a school's stats. Half the class is recruited athletes, URMs, legacies, kids of the rich and famous--thatleaves the unhooked to have the stats that bring the azverages up. You will be looked at in the context of your school If your school is in a poor neighborhood, has many first generation kids, doesn't offer many advanced classes and your family income is low (under $50K), you well get a slight edge. But in general, you will compete against other Asians for places in any class, and Asians score the highest of any group on the SATs. And Indian Americans have the highest average incomes of any group. That's why it will be helpful to choose colleges not popular with Asians. Small LACs in the MW and South usually are good.

to suze: what you're basically trying to tell me is that I am not a URM for most east coast schools but am a URM for most midwest and southern schools?

Also, the rest of you guys seem to be posting reaches for me. I want colleges that I have a really good chance of getting into, they don't have to be top 50 schools or anything just colleges that I have a really solid chance of being admittied to. So I guess I should be asking for safeties? So, post my safety schools, please. :)

You are an ORM at schools in the NE and W and a URM at schools with low numbers of Asians. Ther are pleanty of them but of course they are the schools not respected by many Asians. I know many who's parents wouldn't let them apply to such schools. What I'm saying is that the competition is so fierce in your group that it really makes sense to me to pay close attention to where you will have a leg up.
