I agree and it saves money. I fill as though Wake County is almost like applying from out of state.
fealā¦so sorry of this typo
I know. For my son it was kinda silly to do the college tour because he did it through his school twice, had numerous swim meets at their Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center, and for Swim Across America events that we ran to raise money towards cancer research. There is a lab that is doing cutting edge cancer research that few have heard of beforeā¦but you will in the future. But when I saw how admission officers could track students who did campus tours, we did one.
Congrats!
FWIW, NC State engineering and CS are ranked in the top 25. NC State is not hard to get into outside of natural sciences and engineering.
@Ohdeanor Highly competitive public schools that are nationally ranked, strong STEM environment, lots of Asian and east European immigrants.
That said, @Mary_DeMilia 's son has a compelling story and sounds like a very competitive kid. He will have a really good shot IMO but will be hard.
In addition to what the other posters have responded with, the UNC system has a goal/benchmark of increasing the number of rural and low-income first-year students, here: https://www.northcarolina.edu/institutions-and-affiliates/university-of-north-carolina-chapel-hill-five-year-goals-and-associated-benchmarks/. This contributes to Wake County (home of Raleigh, the state capitol) and other urban-dominated counties being at a disadvantage in the admission of first-year students who are not elite (or low-income).
Thank you for saying so. I explained to him that applying from Wake is similar to a student applying from out of state.
Wow, interesting. I get a university wanting diversity whether it be within their state or otherwise but I also understand limiting oos admissions. Our state flagship, Univ. of FL, has gotten more competitive for our in-state kids every year as it has risen in national prominence. But that rise has definitely been in part to the strong oos candidates they are able to attract. Thanks for the explanation and good luck to your son! He sounds like a very competitive candidate.
Thank you! U of Florida does get great national attention that is for sure! Iām familiar with their swimming and water polo teams.
