I’m currently I’m a junior in High school. I’m planning on majoring in Computer Science at NC State, UNC, or App State. I know I need to work on my SAT, but I wanna see what else I need to work on. Here are my Stats
Race: Asian
Weighted GPA:4.333
Unweighted:3.94
Class Ranking: 4/35
SAT: 1170 (490 in reading and 680 in Math)
Extracurricular: Odyssey of the Mind, National Honor Society, Junior Secretary of SGA, Varsity Golf and Soccer, and 80+ hours of volunteer work in hospital, library, and school-related activities
Also, I’m currently dual enrolled at my local community college and planning to dual enrollment at NC State in the summer unless I get accepted to NCSSM’s Summer Ventures
You have great stats. Only thing to work on is SAT (reading). Also try ACT. Average NC State College of Engineering SAT is 1375 (told us at orientation). My son is a freshman at NC State computer science. Also look at your plan B as I call it. If you decided to change majors does the College have other majors you are interested in? My son got in Chapel Hill as well, but decided against their comp sci program because they didn’t have other majors he would want to study if he didn’t like computer science. If you are thinking technical then NC State is the place to be. Hope that helps. Also do summer ventures if you get it otherwise get a part time job and enjoy your summer. My son went to NCSSM. All he did summers was a part time job as a busboy and worked at a dog boarding place. The number of summers you have to be free are few.
The reading score is the reason why I got placed on the waitlist at NCSSM, but I don’t know how to succeed in the reading portion. The math portion would be higher if I fix my dumb mistakes which I estimate 700-730 in that section
NC State and UNC Chapel Hill were really tough this year. My daughter’s boyfriend had excellent stats (33 ACT, 4.6 weighted GPA) and he got deferred at both schools with an intended major of computer science. My daughter got accepted at UNC Chapel Hill (didn’t apply at State) with a 33 ACT and 4.85 GPA, but her intended major is nursing. She also has some interesting extra-curriculars, like national rock climbing competitor, alpine mountaineering, and lots of vocal/singing stuff. You may want to talk to someone about possibly using a different intended major at Chapel Hill and then switching later. I think I heard they have something like integrated studies or something that some people use.
Are you female? Try the ACT. At my D18’s school everyone takes the ACT junior year- I’m in NC. Based on those results- practice one or the other!!! Your scores aren’t really competitive enough, but based on your grades- I’m sure they can improve. NC State seems very score dependent, based on the results I’ve seen. For App State- you are below the 25% for reading, which is 560. The kids with low SAT scores at UNC who were accepted, had something unique about them. As you can tell from @RebeccaJD even the high score people get deferred.
Trust me, I feel your pain, my D18 has a great GPA and is in IB and couldn’t break 1250 or 26 on an ACT but made a 10 out of 12 on ACT writing- so frustrating! She convinced herself she just stunk at standardized tests- don’t fall into that trap with the reading section- you can do it!
Thanks, I think the AP classes I’m taking are gonna help me boost my reading score a lot since I’m doing a lot of more reading and writing than any other semester. In addition, I was talking to NC State reps at my school about taking classes at my local community college. The reps said that taking classes that transfer students would take would boost my chances of getting to NC State because it shows that you are ready for college and can handle a tough workload!
