Rochesterrrr

What about Whitman and Rhodes?

I am still doing research on them, but they seem to be top notch schools that don't get much attention.

Slippery Rock State University (PA). LOL.

no, it isnt. at all.

I'm not going, but Montana State. Mid-size, great programs, and 3 amazing ski resorts within 50 miles

Reed, Macalaster, Middlebury, Williams, Wesleyan, Oberlin
^Thats from a northwest pa standpoint... maybe in the midwest mac is more respected, reed on the west coast, and so on...

Agree most LAC's are not as well known as they should be. Davidson, Holy Cross, Colgate, Haverford, Swarthmore.

Most people have heard of the University of Texas at Austin but I think it's fair to say that few people outside of Texas (other than graduate school admissions committees) have heard of UT's excellent Plan II Honors program.

I think bowling green, ohio u, and denison are pretty awesome, but not very well-known.

In case someone didn't realize, I was joking about Slippery Rock. I certainly don't want to mislead anyone. However, some of these schools named on this thread are about as well known as Slippery Rock to the avg. Joe. It may not be a top school, but that's a cool name.

And Olin is at the level of MIT, but no one has ever heard of it.

That's understandable. Olin is a very new school. They just graduated their first class a few days ago.

Where is Olin? If it just graduated its 1st class, just how much of an academic reputation can it have?

Olin's reputation is huge despite its very young age. Just all I know.

As for "top" unknown colleges, I'd say Santa Cruz is the best kept secret in the UC system.

Olin is in Boston. It /is/ a very good school, in part b/c it can offer free rides to attract students. It's very small and very rich. I've met students from there and understand it to have a strong, liberal-arts type engineering program. Reputation is a bit of another issue.

Our academic reputation is based on things like statistics of incoming students (mean of 1510, 4.5 for my class), faculty who come from places like MIT and Harvey Mudd, and job offers that our first graduating class got.

Def. The College of New Jersey. It's a wonderful school, but if you aren't from that tri-state area, no one will know what you're talking about.
