Can you name some boarding schools that are not super competitive, but also have good reputations?
Thanks :)

NMH (I’m not sure if it’s 50< but it’s about 40? I think?)

Emma Williard/ MPS (both great schools, but they’re all-girls?)

Pomfret

Loomis is about 35-40, I think? You might want to try that, too… good luck!

In the Mid-Atlantic area, The Hill School, Episcopal High and Woodberry Forest (all-boys) are not super competitive BS’s in admissions but have solid reputations and programs.

I think that Kent School’s acceptance rate is just under 50%.

Blair’s acceptance rate is around 39%, and it is worth looking into.

Take a look at the Masters School. Also, if you want all-girls, look at Westover in addition to MPS and Emma Willard.

If you look outside New England, you will find some great boarding schools that are not as competitive as their New England peers, just because people tend to look in New England.

If there are any specific sports, ec’s or arts that you want, let people know. They may be able to make targeted suggestions then.

If you’re willing to look at schools in PA, try Westtown and Mercersburg. They arean’t really competitive, but are really good schools.

I’ve read in many other threads and in the Greenes’ Guide to Boarding Schools that the less competitive ones are much less generous with their financial aid and have smaller endowments. This alarms me, because although it’s my dream to attend boarding school, I would need a lot of help financially. I was going to include a few ‘safeties’ on my list of schools (like Millbrook), but do you think it’s worth it if they probably won’t give me enough aid?

My school is pretty good and has around a 50% acceptance rate. It’s in CA though if you want to stay on the East Coast. Stevenson School. Our endowment is a bit small, but if you’re a strong applicant you may get up to a full ride.

@salingergirl: It’s probably not worth it if it’ll wreck your family’s finances. Boarding school is an amazing experience but it’s not worth going broke for.

NMH does have a higher acceptance rate (40-ish), but they are very generous with fa.

Bumper-thread cars

Salingergirl–it’s simply not true that smaller schools are less generous. It’s an unfortunate rumor that keeps non-wealthy kids from applying to great schools! The acceptance rates are usually better (by that, I mean lower!) and an “average” kid could wind up at the top of the applicant pool, thereby receiving big, fat FA offers!

It happened to both of my kids and to many here on CC. Open your mind and your eyes and the “little” schools just might open their wallets and doors to you!

Millbrook, The Gunnery, KUA, Pomfret, Cushing or Proctor come to mind. You might want to consider some single sex schools as well. There are some excellent ones. Berkshire, Brooks, Kent, Loomis are also good schools but more competitive - maybe around 40%.
