What are some options for this student after his poor sophomore year? He is really against attending a community college. He likes schools like University of Mississippi and Coastal Carolina. What do you think his chances are there?

Thanks you all so much for your responses.

Wait and see how his junior year pans out? If his grades improve significantly, and he performs well on his ACTs and/or SATs, then he might have a chance.

I agree, wait and see if the hoped for improvement comes this year before you start the college search. And have him consider retaking the ACT (which seemed to be his better test) to see if he can boost the score this year.

And as a side note and of course I don’t know the particulars, but 1) given his grades last year, would it be worth pulling back and making his schedule a bit less rigorous this coming year and 2) some (not all) schools look for 3 years of foreign language so check the schools he is currently considering.(if taking it in the HS won’t work, there may be some other way like an online class or something).

Who are you, a parent? What universe will he get 4.0 in? This isn’t a reasonable goal. Didn’t he flunk soph year, no repeat? That’s like 1.25 on a 4pt scale or am I missing something? Is he willing to take a gap year so he will have two full years of improved grades when applying-- just a thought.

You’re hoping for a lot from this student, but right now he’s a match for those two schools. He’s an average student. If he gets a 4.0, yeaaa! If he doesn’t, yeaaaa for giving it a shot!
