What are some schools with good Computer Science Programs?

I'm hopefully a first generation college bound student. My parents are practically clueless, and so am I. What are some good computer science programs located on the east coast. Predominately in the middle, (Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New york). I would prefer if it was in VA.
Factors:
Low-Middle Income
3.5-3.8 gpa
Rigorous AP courses taken (about 8)
Minority
First Generation
Low experience with programming but VERY interested in it.

I want to do something computer related and hopefully join the FBI to help people. I was thinking of specializing as a system analyst or something similar.

Thank you! :)

Carnegie Mellon (although its in Pittsburgh).

[SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE, Carnegie Mellon](http://www.cs.cmu.edu/)

U of Virginia and VT are also good in-state options.

Thanks :P, I was looking at those two schools but I have no reasonable assessment of my chances in entering. What is my Chance of getting in (percentile wise) and your opinion.
Additional Information
SAT: around 1830 (will retake to get 2000+)
Low extra curriculars (chess club and debate)

SUNY Stony Brook is excellent, although I wouldn’t expect warm and fuzzy treatment.

wheres suny stony brook?

EDIT: Nvm i assume its in NY hehe :$, suNY. I’m so silly. Any good?

^ Yes, you are correct ;)

Stony Brook is on Long Island; about 50 miles east of NYC. It does have an amazing math and science program.

I am not sure, though, that it would have much as far as financial aid for an OOS student. There isn’t much FA for IS either, but the tuition is good instate.

I have heard good things about Rowan in NJ.

Carnegie Mellon is the best by far

MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Berkley, Caltech, Georgia Tech, UT-Austin (Turing Scholars), Stanford…

^SAT is way too low for any of those. You’d need about a 2300. Try RPI, Rochester, NJIT, Rutgers.

True but you will get a lot of help being a first generation student from a low income family, not to mention that your GPA is pretty good.

1,000,000% false! Great school! Not the best by far. Not even necessarily the best. You will find tons of people who would put up very legitimate arguments for MIT, Stanford, Berkeley and UIUC for that top spot.

None of that matters considering that he requested to stay on the East Coast, and preferably in the Virginia sort of area.

@stan2: I know it is farther south, and you had been looking more north, but Georgia Tech is still SORT OF east coast and has a great program assuming you raised your SATs a little. Although I have heard conflicting reports about the overall undergrad experience there, it is tough to beat the education.

Ah my mistake, I have this nasty habit of skimming things due to a fairly burdensome literature review experience.

Why not Virgina Tech?

Someone already suggested VaTech so I didn’t want to sound like a broken record. =)

And don’t worry, the only reason I am even forum-whoring right now is because I have skipped going to the lab today to study for a big test, and I currently need a break from it, haha.

No worries–I’m waiting for a simulation to finish running.

Add University of Maryland for a strong CS program

I am waiting for mud to dry so we can install our new wind tunnel… =/ I can’t believe it is bone dry all summer, and as soon as the contractors are ready to pour concrete, it rains like a ■■■■.

Based on your preference to for something in VA and your GPA/SAT, George Mason University might match you.
