What are "supplements?"

I keep seeing people post their stats and mentioning about submitting "supplements." Can someone explain to me what they are? I saw that some people are submitting art or music. Is it just something you submit along with your college applications to show your strengths?

Go to a college admissions website and look up “submitting supplemental materials”. You’ll see lots of guidance.

It depend on the context. Supplements could be additional materials (like essays) required by the individual college or they could be optional arts supplements, like art portfolio or music/dance/theater performance recordings.

Your best bet is to go to the website of each college that you are applying to and follow their instructions as specific requirements vary. Some colleges encourage arts supplements; some do not.

I think many of the references you are seeing refer to required supplements for colleges in addition to the common application. If you submit the common application, a number of colleges, particularly higher ranks, have additonal forms you have to submit, which may include submitting an additional essay. Other references, particularly for any major like music or art, are to things required for such majors such as portfolio showing pictures of your art work.

See: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/impact-of-arts-supplement-on-elite-college-admissions.htm

Some colleges will accept video supplements, while others will only accept CD’s from musicians and singers, or slides for an art portfolio. Some colleges have very specific requirements, while others are more open ended, so it’s very important to check with each college to see what they require. And then, there are warnings such as this one:

So, students should only submit supplemental materials if they have exceptional talent. Here are three samples:
