What are the advantages of an ivy league education?

I thought this was interesting. Here are the richest citizens of the United States. I took out the ones who did not attend college. Notice the amount that attended an Ivy league or equivalent(Stanford, MIT).

greatgirls,

It would be even more interesting to see where they send their kids.

“Think of the Ivies as Abercrombie - great clothes, yes, but it’s the brand name that gets people”

but what if you need dress pants, dress shirt, and dress shoes, you can’t find those at Abercrombie. See, Ivies are not everyone’s fit.

While Ivies don’t have a monopoly on such success and wealth, they are disproportionately represented–but that is as much the self-selection of admissions as it is any actual advantage conferred on the school’s graduates.

The wisest advice in this thread so far came early on, perhaps from GADad. It’s the “all boats rise” concept. Having sent our D to a top private school in Atlanta, she is already a far different and better student than 1) when she entered, and 2) she would have been had she gone to her local public school. It’s not any one thing – the teachers, curriculum, facilities – it’s what attracts and motivates top students to be better.

Having said that, I feel strongly that a serious student does not need to go to an Ivy to get that. Nearly all the benefits (perhaps shorter on bragging rights and alumni network)are available at any serious school today. And, UVA is in that category. BTW, saving $100K over four years seems like a pretty smart decision too. Best,
