What are the benefits of self studying AP exams?

I always see some people in this discussion asking about how to self study for AP exam. Is it really worth it to do that?

If you got the time, do it.

Most of the people who do it are overachievers and most people on here are overachievers. It’s worth it, if you want to overachieve and get more college credits out of the way.

I choose to self-study because I’m interested in studying the courses and I want to get college credits. Moreover, the courses I’m self-studying aren’t offered at my school.

College credit, especially when the course isn’t offered at your school.
Or just so you can take more AP’s and free up your schedule.

for me, the stars aligned, so I just did it; I’m very interested in environmental science, the classes that i was placed into (freshman year, no choice in scheduling) required anywhere from 0-15 minutes of homework a night so I had a ton of free time, I read about self studying here on CC, went out, bought a barrons book and read thru it, took the APES test, and got a 5.

Unfortunately, most colleges don’t give credit for AP environmental science HOWEVER my guidance counselor and dean of students both think that I’m a genius now that they heard of my 5  which has its benefits when I’m doing scheduling and when I need a rec come senior year
