Does going to a summer program at say Columbia or Harvard look good on your application, or is there some other benefit (besides the experience)?

Don't do things that you think will look good on college applications. Do things that you are truly passionate about and want to do. You will come to learn this senior year and will regret it dearly.

I will regret it more if by my senior year I have weak application and end up in a second rate school.

Wow.
You"re application will not look weak because you don"t have summer college programs. It will probably look better if you used that time to do an internship or something worthwhile. Accordingly, you"re application will not look strong because you DID a summer college program.
If you really want to do a prestigious summer program for the app look into RSI and TASP. summer programs thatrequire you to pay sums of up to 8,000 are not commendable in a college application.

Forgive my use of quotation marks (apostrophe button is not working)

Okay. Stop. Not everyone gets into RSI and TASP and there's nothing wrong with college programs. College programs aren't good because you've accomplished a whole lot, they're good becase they show commitment to the school. If you go to the Columbia summer program and then apply to Columbia, Columbia admissions will see that you tested the school out and liked it and would probably be happy here. It does give you a slight advantage, but take not that it will not get you into the school. (oh- and I'm not bashing RSI or TASP- I'm not old enough to have applied to these places yet)

College programs do look good on your college apps because of the experience it gives you. I did CTY and Summer @ Brown and it's basically you take a college course by yourself far away for a few weeks. You should definitley do one if your interested, it's an AMAZINGGGGGG experience and colleges will see you're ready to adjust to college life.

What do RSI and TASP stand for?

RSI = Research Science Institute (MIT)

TASP = Telluride Association Summer Programs (Various universities like Cornell, UMich, UTexas-Austin, etc)

Thank you! I don't think I'm interested in either of those programs, from the sound of it. Would a musical theatre intensive at NYU or a music intensive at Carnegie Mellon look not-so-good? Or even taking courses at Penn or Harvard, whose programs I'm also applying to. Will that not look great?

summer programs all look the same ... whether you took it at harvard or rutgers. The only difference would be if the summer program was free, which would imply t hat there was an admissions process. Ex: TASP, RSI, Gov. School

summer programs at colleges look good if you have used them to pursue an interest. The student considering majoring in engineering who takes an engineering course, or the student who studes a foreign language at a college over the summer and continues at a local college in the fall. Of course, make sure that the course you take is a real college course, not one meant for high school kids. It doesn't matter where you do the programs, as long as you are doing them because you are interested in the subject matter of the course you are taking.

Is it bad for college if you become a CIT at your sleepaway camp during the summer after Junior year?
