Newhouse at syracuse is definitely top 5 in the country (the grad program is ranked 1 or 2)

From what I know,
it's Syracuse, NYU, BU, and the big daddy:: Northwestern

Vanderbilt has their human organizational developement. i think that is like communications and it is suppose to be a really great program.

My family has a long history in journalism... I know that in the journalism community the top three schools are nearly universally regarded as

Missouri

Northwestern

Syracuse

My grandmother went to Medill at Northwestern and has some friends who graduated from Missouri, so they're always joking with each other about which is better. Generally, Missouri is considered the best though.

Syracuse is generally regarded as tops when it comes to TV/Radio/Film, while Northwestern/Mizzou are a little bit stronger in the print department. Depends what you are looking for I guess.

journalism is not the same as communication...UPENN is the best for comm. Here is a ranking of the best doctoral comm programs.

Hoo,

There is a huge difference in undergrad and doctoral programs. I don't think UPENN is even among the best undergraduate communications programs, although I could be wrong.

this so called ranking by hoo is no such thing. it's merely a list of which school had the most journal article citations according to NCA, which is only one of several communications societies. if you believe this list then WVU outranks Annenberg and everyone else.

and you're right, cuse. newhouse has traditionally been stronger on the electronic side, while mizzou and medill stronger in print. iowa is pretty strong across the board as is annenberg west.

im a international student and im looking for a school which is strong in communications and journalism and will give a financial aid as well, any tips?

Syracuse is prob tops for TV/radio.

Not sure about PR.

Top 3 comm schools overall are Northwestern, Syracuse, Mizzou.

Grady College @ UGA

I'll try to answer the question regarding radio/tv film majors ... generally these are not journalism based programs, they are more performance based. I strongly encourage journalism students to look for programs - in print or broadcast - that still focus on journalistic principles. Just because you can stand in front of a camera and perform - that doesn't mean you are a journalist.

What about Sports Journalism??

If you want sports journalism/broadcast - University of Missouri is still one of the best programs - because they actually own and operate the NBC affiliate. In class, you work for the station. You can get part-time jobs over the summer, during school, etc.

Sports journalism is about good skills. You can get those at many schools. Just look for internships, part=time jobs that provide some sports experience. Most newspapers still hire stringers to cover games, some TV stations have part-time jobs, sports websites etc.

The most important thing right now - is to be versatile. You have to be able to write, shoot video, shoot pictures, post, blog, look good on camera, etc. You need to be able to do it all - or at least most of it.

Hey guys… I was just reading the posts on this thread, and realised that most of them centred around a Journalism major… I’m going to college next Fall, and so my application process would start this year, and I was wondering which schools are good for undergrad Comm. Not journalism, but Communications and/or Media Studies in general…
I wanted to know if these places are good for the major Im looking for- basically something generalised and not focused on journalism…
UNC chapel hill
Northwestern
UCLA
NYU
And what other places would you people suggest I look into? Thanks!

Who do you want to be when you grow up? A gaffer? A movie producer? A deep thinker about media and public policy? A beat reporter? A syndicated columnist? A media mogul? Robert Gibbs? Rush Limbaugh? Kathleen Hall Jamieson?

The most selective, prestigious private schools usually do not offer Communications majors. At the few that do (such as Penn or Northwestern) the focus is likely to be different than it is at the average state university. So it is hard to answer the “what’s the best college” question unless we first separate the communications apples from the communications oranges, then describe what we’re talking about in each category.

UNC has a great journalism school; Northwestern is supposed to be very good as well. I’d also recommend looking into Mizzou and Syracuse-both have top flight journalism programs.

The National COmmunication Association at natcom dot org has some good information that might help you out.
