Which colleges have the best communication studies? Is there a list anywhere of them?

The best schools for communications, in no particular order, are generally listed as: University of Southern California, University of Missouri-Columbia, Northwestern, Syracuse U, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Boston U, NYU.

Other excellent schools for communications include: U of Maryland-College Park, Ithaca College, Emerson College, U of Madison-Wisc., U of Texas-Austin, U of Oregon, Indiana U.

Still other ideas: Qunnipiac U, UCLA, UCSD, Cal State Chico, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Florida, University of Georgia, Susquehanna, Fairfield U, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara U, Chapman U, Southern Methodist U.

But there are many others as well. I'm sure folks can and will add to this list as it is late and I am sleepy. :)

University of Pennsylvania - Annenberg School (undergrad major). It's the same guy after which USC's communication school is named.

Communications is a major built on shaky academic ground (only recenty a discipline and not considered as scholarly as other fields of study). If you are looking for a program, it should most definitey be attached to an urban experience for internships and work experience. Most young grads who have great first jobs in the field (i.e. MTV, NBC, New York Times, Saturday Night Live, CNN, Vogue, Economist, etc), got their start because of internship exposure. NYC is the communication captital of the world and as a result would probably be the best place to study the field in the U.S. Columbia, NYU, Fordham...

Los Angeles and major cities like Boston or Chicago are also media hubs, but not in the same boat as NYC.

well, one might suppose that to a cro-magnon man, a century is "recent."
don't be confused by the last post. there have been communication majors on many campuses since the dawning of the 20th century.

almost every university of note has some kind of comm program, whether applied like journalism/mass comm, or theoretical like speech comm/org comm. it is a matter of opinion as to which major is more of less "academic."

Northwestern University! (Although many make fun of the comm. studies people here).

well, comm studies people kind of get make fun of everywhere (albeit most majors have some kind of joke made about them anyway), even my brother who went to Newhouse at Syracuse, of which is one of the best ranked programs in general at the school, and he still got joked on sometimes.

It's probably always better if you take one of the facets of a comm emphasis (film, tv, music, journalism) and roll with that instead because it's more focused, but if you're really unsure, then comm. is sort of the way to go.
