What are the best dorms?

I'm a transfer student and I'm trying to pick which dorms to live in.
I would prefer a single dorm, and live in a substance free environment.

Nicest but not social is couzens and Lloyd

What do you mean not social?

probably that people in your hall are not inclined to be social with each other.

north quad, couzens, mosher-jordan are the better dorms on campus.

@collegebound_guy where is the building where most international students live.

I agree with the previous assessments…considering location though, south quad and west quad should probably be included. Anything on the hill (alice lloyd, couzens, mosher-jordan, markley) is a 10-15 minute walk from classes. It’s not that bad, and I love living on the hill but all the dorms ending in quad are much closer.

North quad is pretty hard to get (especially as an underclassman). Singles are rare, so if you want one, good luck…

Markley is all freshman and since youre a transfer I would recommend against it. If you want a social hall I would recommend stockwell? (all sophomores) and I say not social because its mostly sophomores in singles who keep their door closed (lloyed, couzens). As far as location, west and south quad are nice

Are there single dorms in Hill?

If you really want to not have roommates, consider looking for an apartment right now or a sublet later. Too few singles in the dorms, and they go to returning students. That’s gonna be tough if you’re out of the country. I think you should accept that you’ll have a roommate and pick the location you prefer.

Agree that a single is highly unlikely for you. Are you female? If so, you might like Barbour or Newberry or Martha Cook. They are all female. You will have a roommate, but it is likely to be quieter. Not necessarily sub free, but I think there is a less “use” of substances there than in the co-ed dorms.

squad hands down. markley is prolly pretty good too tho.

there is no one dorm where all the international students stay together? Why are you international?

@collegebound_guy I read that Northquad was the home of international students.

If you want to meet people go to SQuad or WQuad. If you want to do global scholars go to NQuad, but if you don’t want to do that exact program do NOT go to NQuad, go to the new EQuad instead.

Markely and Bursley will be primarily freshmen which may be awkward but if you don’t care about most of your friends being younger then you go for it.

Any more imput on this?

I was told by U Michigan housing that South Quad will be closed next school year for major renovations. And newly renovated East quad will reopen fall '13.

[$60M South Quad renovation OK’d by University of Michigan regents]($60M South Quad renovation OK'd by University of Michigan regents)

You can ask for a substance free room when you fill out housing application, but they don’t seem to have a substance-free housing community like some universities.

What college are you applying to? The LSA honors program has had their rooms in South Quad. Housing told me that the program will be moved to West Quad next year during south Quad renovation. West Quad has not has NOT yet been renovated. Possibly a substance-free room in honors housing would be a relatively quiet environment.

I’m living in Stockwell this year and it’s my favoritest dorm! I’m for second year students and it’s 70% singles, but i’m in a double and it’s quite social, and there’s always activities happening. And it’s really clean and fancy looking! It’s on the hill right next to mojo, so you 're next to a dining hall and it’s next to the ccrb (the gym) so it’s a great location.
