Dorms

Which are the best dorms?

North quad

Markley 10 char

My vote goes to Newberry.

North Quad
Are you kidding? Markley?? There’s almost nothing good about Markley outside of the slightly better social scene

The best dorms (IMO):

South Quad - Great location. SQuad is right next to the Union (has Subway, Panda Express, etc. which are nice when you get bored of dorm food). The food there is okay, but it gets old pretty quickly. Dorm rooms are average sized, and some of them have sinks and new furniture sets.

West Quad - Also a great location. West is actually connected to the Union, so you never have to go outside in the winter to get food. The dining hall is similar to South’s. They have a burrito bar, which is nice, but the dining hall isn’t open for breakfast, which means you have to go across the street to get breakfast. The dorm rooms are generally decent sized, but there are no elevators (kind of a pain if you live on 4th or 5th floor).

North Quad - The newest dorm. North Quad has suite-style rooms (meaning that there are no community bathrooms, which is nice), and really nice computer labs/study areas throughout. The dining hall is also pretty nice (probably on par with food at MoJo). Not sure if you can get in here if you’re a freshman unless you join a living-learning community.

The Hill dorms are OK (Stockwell was just renovated and is pretty nice) but not so good in terms of location. Bursley and Baits I/II should be avoided if possible. Having to ride the bus back and forth to class gets old fast.

Markley social scene was tops when I was a dorm-dweller. Three years removed now though – haven’t set foot in NQ.

Are there dorms you guys would recommend for freshmen or have primarily freshmen?

markley is the best for freshmen; north quad is nice, but people in their halls don’t socialize much with their neighbors and its for sophomores and up.

Anyone care to give some insight for East Quad? I’m thinking of RC so that’s where I’ll end up.

^Good location… that’s about it…

North, South, and West Quad are all good sized rooms with great location, but as a freshman, your chances of getting North are nil. South Quad the only freshman are honors, I think. East Quad has a good location, but is kind of a bad dorm in all other respects.

Stockwell and Mojo are nice on the hill, but unless you are in the MRC, you can’t get into Mojo as a freshman, and Stockwell is sophomore only. Lloyd is closed for renovations next year. Couzens is likely the only one of the 4 that you might land in.

Markley has the smallest rooms by far, and is easily the worst dorm on central campus, which is why roughly half the freshmen are here. Of course, it’s much better than being on north campus.

North campus is where I live. Bursley has good room sizes, and the food is better than all except the hill dining area. However, this does not make up for having to take the bus. It is hell, and adds 40 minutes (on weekdays) to an hour and 15 (on weekends) of wasted time to your day. Baits is even worse, since you have to walk to bursley for food, and there is even less community. And if you get northwood…hoooo boy.

hows Oxford? helen newberry? (i just like the sound of that, hahaha)

Mary Butler Markley for sure!!

MichiganGirl: Newberry is awesome. The girls are very friendly and social, it’s very clean and well decorated (MUCH cleaner than East/South Quad, I haven’t seen the other dorms to compare), bunch of lounges with TVs, an exercise room, computer lab, kitchen, and it’s just a lot more homey-- it feels like you’re living in a house, not a hotel like I felt when I lived in EQ last year (but that room was MASSIVE so that was nice). The rooms here are smaller than in the other dorms because it is a smaller building, but there are like four different huge lounges that are very comfortable and are nice to hang out and study in and the rooms aren’t too small. Most of us eat in the Barbour cafeteria next door, which isn’t open for breakfast so that’s kind of lame-- have to walk over to South Quad but it’s only a block or two, but it’s a quaint little cafeteria where pretty much everybody knows everybody else, you’ll never eat alone unless you want to. And we have TONS of events for all the girls in Newberry, and sometimes we go along with Barbour too, we go on trips to the movies and to different places, and the different committees plan activities too, and we have all kinds of events for the Newberry/Barbour girls to hang out. Plus, Newberry is home to the Adelia Cheever program, which is a group that meets twice a month (if you want to, you have to sign up for the program to live here but nobody will make you go), and they are a discussion/activity group about womens issues and social justice issues, the girls have a lot of fun with that and there are a lot of ways to get involved. Since there are only about 100 residents, it’s a lot easier to plan events like that and get to know people and make friends.

The number one thing that seems to keep girls away is they think that guys can’t visit or stay the night, and that’s not true-- guys are welcome 24/7, they just aren’t allowed to sign a room contract here. My boyfriend comes to stay every weekend and it’s not any kind of problem.

And that misconception is to your advantage, because since so many people rule out Newberry over the guy issue, there are a lot of open rooms and it’s a good chance to get onto Central Campus. And the location can’t be beat, it’s right across the street from Angel Hall.

What’s the party dorm?

The biggest party dorm is definitely Mary Markely, but it sucks in every other aspect. Try to get into West or South Quad.
