writing more like creative writing vs traditional comparative lit scholarly writing/english? perhaps, ideally, qb schools that also are strong in movie media like writing.

top 3, 5, 8 qb schools strongest in the above

You’d want to look for schools that offer media studies (might also be called film/cinema studies). A lot of schools don’t have it.

It’s hard to say what exactly the best schools are for movie media…I know USC is pretty much considered the best of the best. Location is important as you might be able to intern at a major film studios. SoCal is the big capital for that as it has just about all of the major ones, and 4 of the partner colleges are located there.

thanks for the replies and thanks , nostalgic, for the link. yes, USC is THE bigtime pgm in all things movies. Speilberg was famously rejected there.

also, I agree that cinema studies is many times not present ( I think a good solid school like Haverford does nt have such a pgm , eg, I think) probably because it is a relatively new discipline as (probably) the art is relatively new. But one thing to watch is how built out the pgm is. Is there a major or just a minor / concentration available or just a few classes? how many dedicated faculty are allocated to this - vs a few english teachers merely using cinema as another way to do literary analysis?

Of QB schools, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Emory, Colorado, Chicago, Pomona, Oberlin, Hamilton Wesleyan, Williams and Vassar have strong undergrad writing programs, and some astonishing faculties (check out Princeton’s English dept!). Vassar, Columbia, Wesleyan, Stanford, Northwestern also have outstanding film studies. Nationally Kenyon, and Iowa would be top choices for both MFA and undergrad creative writing. If you know for sure you want to write for film then USC, UCLA and NYU would be first followed by some art and film institutes. There are also less selective colleges that have excellent film and media departments (Ithaca College, Syracuse University, Chapman, Emerson, Boston U, UT Austin and more…) A cousin of mine graduated from NYU Tisch just a few years ago and is working productively, creatively and (importantly) making a good living in the field already. I was impressed with the breadth, depth and academic integrity of their program as he went through it. His writing courses and film history/theory classes were sophisticated and reflected an academic commitment rather than just pre-professional focus. I also have friends studying film/media at Vassar and Wesleyan - both are very happy. You have lots of exciting choices!

one more thing: QB has a facebook group and other forums where you can discuss this with QB students who are attending the colleges you’re interested in. If you’re applying for QB or are already a college prep scholar, you can join these groups. I’ve noticed that Vassar students in particular are really enthusiastic about the film program there and it seems like Vassar is attracting more and more film studies majors. Just an observation.
